  • wont stay running

My 80 SG won't stay running. Bike has sat for some time as medical issues have come and go through the years. I charged the battery and went to start the bike. With full choke on bike revs up, and 1/2 choke works until you push the choke in all the way and then the bike dies. I suspect the carbs are gunned up. I put fresh gas in tank and added ethanol treatment and fuel stabilizer in November last year. Thoughts?

Clogged idle jets from sitting. Choke is providing the fuel the bike needs to keep going until you secure the choke, then when the jet is supposed to be providing that nice idle mixture it dies because the jet is clogged.

Some folks suggest using SEAFOAM in the gas to help but that has not ever worked for me and I won't waste the money on that stuff again.

IN my opinion you'll need to pull the carbs and clean them. It's a royal pain in the butt if you've not done it before or not done it frequently. I've done this chore so many times I can get them out in just a few minutes.

Take your time.... clean them well, problem solved.

I have taken these carbs off so much I can't count I have the Pingel fuel valve so I just disconnect 2 lines and unscrew the clamps and pull. Thank you for the reply Kurt! Not a fan of Seafoam either-I like Berrymans chem tool and Klotz.

Sounds like you know what is going on. When you parked the bike what did you do to it before leaving it? Did you have ethanol gas in it? I did the same thing on one of mine a couple of years ago and had the same problem. Mine would actually idle though and when I got out on it it had no top end. Basically 45 to 50 mph was all it would do. Off came the carbs and a good cleaning with white cleaning vinegar in my ultrasound. You could acrtually see the crap flying out of the jets. Oh and yes I had let it sit up with ethanol gas in it. Never again. When I winterize I make sure my tank is full of ethanol free, run all the gas out of the carbs then drain them to keep the bowls clean as well. Never did believe that seafoam is the cure all either. It has it's uses but not after the carbs are gummed up.

I need to remove the pilot jets and emulsion tubes as that has not been done yet. Does an ultra-sonic cleaner work on these carbs? Just don't want to screw things up. My boss can loan me his cleaner.

oldyam80sg, I suggest also checking carb bowl gaskets when laying in place on carb bowels that there isn't gasket edges inward of bowl edges. This will hang up the floats as there is minimal side clearance for the floats. To correct, gasket in place and a razer blade following inside edge of bowl solves the problem. Also, with floats setting in place, make sure they are paralel with sides of float bowls. Just tweak those float arms a tad to correct to paralel with float bowl sides.

I cleaned the carbs better than I ever did. I replaced 2 float needles and the bike started up after a few minutes. I shut the bike off to get my gear on, but the bike would not start after that. No cranking - I hit button and nothing. I had it towed to my mom's house and when I took off the seat and lifted the tank, the wires that connect to the starter were somehow disconnected. Plugged it in-rerouted the wires around and the bike started. The bike then ran until I shut it off.
