    Speedo Repair

    Has anyone successfully taken a speedo (std) apart and put it back together? Basic primitive workshop methods would end up leaving the metal trim trashed. It seems it's well sealed and tamper-proof (for obvious reasons) but the face on mine has faded and I have another one I'd like to replace it with. If it can't be done without destroying it, I'll just live with it. Not interested in playing with the odometer - I look upon 92.5K km as an accomplishment. Or, alternatively, does anyone know of a gauge repair shop that can pull this off?

      All British, European, American and Japanese gauges can be remanufactured to as new with a one year warranty. If needed any gauge can be supplied with a new dial face, chrome bezel-ring, number drums etc. so it meets the costumers requirements

        Thanks, guys! Your input is beyond valuable! Looks like potential grief to ty this myself - think I'll check out Joel Levine Company while the bike's stored for the winter.

          My experience with Joel Levine was bad to say the least. He fixed my speedo, which had 39,755 miles, when I sent it to him. I specifically asked about the millage and he said he would not alter it in any way. He also mentioned it would be $300 including shipping. It was definitely trashed as the gears had disintegrated and the gray/black dust was all over the face and the numbers. Also, the needle had snapped and left only about 3/4 inch from end. Upon completion when I asked him before delivery how much I owed he said he had sent a postcard with the price and that it was $347 because it was in such bad shape. I still had not received the card so I sent him a check. The next day I get the card and it says $247. Upon receiving the speedo the odometer was reading 24,487 and had a white needle. I called him with theses three concerns and he just said he doesn't mess with the millage, the post card could not have said $247 and that he couldn't find an orange needle for it.
          What really bothers me is the lack of Customer Service. He could have called or texted about the millage and the needle. If this was an Vincent and my plan was to rebuild a completely stock bike this would be a real problem. I was extremely disappointed at his lack of accountability for the issues. If the price written in the card was a typo, I can understand, but he made no effort to even discuss it. There were other conversations with him during the month I was in vacation and he had my speedo which made me think he is just a one man show who is definitely fixing clocks but is desperate for money. Again not caring much about pleasing the customer.
          I then read some bad reviews he had received. Some people claim he has been awesome, which I don't doubt as he did fix mine perfectly, but when something goes wrong he won't accept his wrongdoing. There was a review where a customer says his speedo and tach for a Triumph never arrived. Joel had not even insured them so the person is probably still dealing with that issue.
          There has to be some other company that does repairs. Good luck.

                cajun31 iirc the wobbling can be fixed by cleaning the line with some lubricant. Just search on youtube jumpy tachometer motorcycle. There should be a video with a guy spraying cleaner down the line while it is disconnected. This should somewhat fix it.

                    You are correct, ekim! ALL xs11 tachs are electric, so it's NOT a sticky cable causing the problem. It can be hardened grease/oil inside the mechanism, or a poor electrical signal. Cleaning ALL CONNECTIONS on the bike will go a long way in finding the problem.

                      Like I said, I am not doubting his expertise as a repair man. The speedo works like new. Even the mph difference has been cut down to 3mph when compared with GPS. My problem is his lack of accountability when something went wrong. He is not worried about Customer Service. Three things that he could have called or texted me before doing. To much to ask apparently, he just did what would get him his money. I'm glad your experience was a good one, as i'm sure others have had too.

                          Has anyone ever been able to do a pictorial of exactly what needs to cleaned in the tach if hardened grease and how to go about it? There was a tech tip on it ... I think, but I never knew what to look for. Was thinking if something fairly straight forward ... maybe a hole could be drilled in the bottom plastic housing to provide access and then after cleaning fixing could use a rubber plug to cover the hole. Anyone have a bad tach they would be willing to sacrifice for an experiment?
