New Rear Tire over the Weekend

My Saturday project was a new Shinko 712 130/90-17 on my 79' XS11 standard. This did not happen all on Saturday as this rim had the bead locks (tube locks) or whatever you call them. I used 1/2-20 set screws in their holes by drilling out with 7/16" bit and then tapped out ( but not quite all the way through so the screw would have a stop). Used JB weld on the threads and filled the outside areas with JB weld also.

Bought a new valve stem at Napa and some 24" long zip ties at the HF. Went pretty good, did use tire irons a bit at the end to get over.

This tire did NOT have a marking dot for light spot in tire BTW so it just went on and then on to the bead setting. Had a bear of a time with it, maybe compressor not sending enough air but also I used NO SEALANT as following the mount it got balanced with 2 oz of tire beads. Anyways used a 2 inch ratchet strap to "seal the deal" so to speak but tire did not pop when the bead set like I have seen it in the past, just came up to pressure.

Then the beads went in via the valve stem ( not too bad a process) and then I installed the brake rotor. This 79' uses a standard non-slotted type but I had a slotted one laying around and they are the same size and thickness so lightly cleaned it up and used it instead.

Next, after taking my damn hard bags off I took the final drive off, cleaned out old grease inside, re-greased, put back together and then time for the wheel. Re-install went fine ( take pics of the spacers to refer back to later)

Got it all back together and rode it a quick 25 to see how it feels...it feels good and sticks to the road. Next up the front. Maybe I'll take better pics to share

Nice job there. I just put my rear tire back on as well, not a replacement though. Last weekend I went to take the bike out for a ride and I said to myself I should probably check the tire pressure as I don't do it every outing. So I put my thumbs across the tread of the rear tire and squish squish, 0 psi. As I spun the tire around sure enough a foreign body is sticking out. I bought a patch/plug kit on amazon and so far so good.
