  • Oil pressure light question…

Can I wire the oil light externally?? I know that the fuel light (80’ special, by the way) cannot work with most aftermarket speedos, being that it goes through a step-down regulator, from what I’ve read here. After looking at the wiring schematic, does the oil pressure light also go through that as well?? Definitely need that light!

My dumba$$ stripped the oil drain plug, so I’m waiting on my “new” oil pan to get here. I’m so pissed at myself for stripping that…but I figure it’s a good chance to clean the pump screen.

Aka, can I wire a separate light for the oil pressure sensor outside of my new speedo / tach without frying anything??

Yes you can, attach 12V+ to one side of the bulb and then attach the wire from the sensor to the other side. The oil pressure sensor is just a ground switch (normally closed) which completes the circuit when there is no pressure (light is on) and breaks the circuit when there is oil pressure (light is off).

Edit: After studying the wiring schematic of the SG, you should be able to use the blk/red wire and the brown wire in the harness plug in the headlight bucket to run to your new bulb.

Well, just put the light in, and…whole buncha nope. I don’t understand at all…I used the correct connections, and even tried the old light…that doesn’t work either. At a loss!!

Ok, first I would check the sending unit. Unhook the wire and take your ohm meter and check the sensor terminal one side and ground the other. The reading should be infinity (circuit complete). With the bike running and oil pressure is present, there should be no reading (open circuit). If this checks out, check continuity of the sensor wire, one lead down at the sensor blk/red wire and one end up top at headlight bucket blk/red wire.

DUDE…the wire from the actual unit was unplugged!!! How that happened, I have NO IDEA. I haven’t even messed with that side of the circuit since I’ve had it. The wiring behind the right cover is a NIGHTMARE (thanks to the PO), and I couldn’t figure out where it even plugged in!! I found it, and Phil, thanks again for the advice!

I’m half tempted to just re-wire the whole thing from scratch. Probably going to wait for the rebuild / having a bigger space to work on it, but it really does need some cleaning up. I HAVE TO have another bike to ride while I rebuild it, though…I’ll lose my mind if I can’t ride. 100% serious. There’s a 78’ for sale around me for a decent price, and no one’s biting…

Yep, I forgot about that plug behind the RS cover, glad you found it. Let us know when you get it working.
