  • Engine tapping sound help

    So my ‘79 XS started making some engine tapping sounds on the upper left side of engine today.
    Also of note, I dropped the bike in the garage on that side today 🤦🏻
    Any help diagnosing based on the sound would be appreciated. Video here;

      I don't hear anything unusual, but you can also check for exhaust leaks. That's something that could result from a fall.

        Thanks. I saw somewhere else that the problem was a vacuum hose misplacement. I have pods - the hose from the left crankcase is connected to carb#2 on the carb itself. Vacuum hose from left side of gas tank petcock is attached to carb#2 manifold. Let me know if this is correct.

          Yep, I would spray some PB Blaster on the exhaust header nuts/studs and tighten down. Please be careful not to snap any studs, then you are in for a real headache.

          Yes, your vacuum hook ups are correct.

              How many miles on the bike? Have your or anyone else ever done a valve adjustment? I hear just a slight tapping sound that may indicate a valve adjustment is due. Of course as was previous suggested ... if you still have the original cam chain tensioner it may need to be adjusted and the ticking sound might disappear. Are you familiar with the things I have asked and do you have a manual?

                Valves make more noise after they adjusted. As miles accumulate, the valves wear deeper into the the valve seat, reducing cam clearance. Then thinner shims are needed to restore the clearance to the cam and bring back the normal clatter.

                  I adjusted the cam chain and tapping is still there. Bike has only 5k miles on it but difficult to say if that is accurate. Don’t know any of the maintenance history either.
                  I may replace the exhaust seals first and if that does not help, I will get the valves adjusted.
