  • electronic ignition module failure common?

Have owned multiple xs1100's since 1980. Working on a couple low mileage but long forgotten bikes (one had being kept outside under a horse blanket for 15 years) got that running ran it a couple hundred miles over the summer only to have the ignition unit fail this spring(i think) It would be hard to start, backfire, drop a couple cylinders when riding, cut out randomly. I put another old unit on bike it fired right up and ran fine for about 50 miles then did the same thing. put on a third unit runs like a raped ape. I am concerned the fault may be something on the bike killing the electronic ignition module and I might wreck another. I don't think its the pick up coil wiring breakage. I've had that before and was completely different symptoms. Any thought's and does anyone repair these units or are there a good supply out there. kind of one of the few parts that when gone shut sx1100 riding down

where do we add the bikes owned to the bottom of the page? also looking for near Delaware members.

I would go through all of your electrical connections and grounds to verify everything is clean and making good contact. I haven't heard of the TCI just going bad. Of course everything is over 40 years old now.

Been over all the grounds and connectors twice. If they were bad plugging in a different TCI wouldn't make a difference. just concerned something else on bike could be damaging TCI

Symptoms are consistent with failing pick-up coil wires. They can start working and stop working intermittently.

TCI failures are not common. It would be super rare for you have two of them fail. They are readily available - another indication the don't fail very often.
