  • Aftermarket Ignition Install problems

First post here. I searched the forums but did not see anything on this. Looking for any help I can get wiring this product. If my signature block doesnt show up I've got a 1980 special.

    This is the product https://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/produ...h-chrome-bezel

Wiring diagram is in the pictures.

Ive tried numerous configurations and have burnt through a lot of fuses. Have been able to get the bike running but the starter will still be engaged. Have had it wired where it will crank but cant get power to tci box. I do have a wiring diagram from this site.

    Some of my findings:
S and B have continuity when momentary is engaged
S and A have continuity when momentary is engaged
S has 12v when momentary is engaged

      Dean,

Tell us how you have it wired. Maybe someone can pick up from there to lead you in the right direction.

Looking through some schematics, it seems the ignition switch you have is NOT designed to work with the ballast resistor on the XS11. It can be made to work, but you will need to know some electrics to do this. If you have aftermarket 3-Ohm coils, this will make it easier.
on the stock key switch, you need the B for hot in and R is hot out, on and start position.
The starter button has L/W, to the starter relay and for bypass of the ballast resister. The starter button itself actually just grounds the connection to run the starter motor. Your switch sends a positive to the starter relay, backwards of what Yamaha does.
You can use the switch IF you keep the stock starter button. From the Yamaha side, Br goes to pole B, R goes to pole A. Turn switch on and hit the button.

          Xsive,

Red from stock ignition switch to B
Blue, R/Y, Brown from stock ign to A
Both R/W from stock starter switch to port C
Blue/white from stock starter switch to port S
          Turn key nothing happens
Tap grd on S and bike starts without using momentary. If i leave grd on S, the starter keeps running

Thanks for the response DiverRay. Really hoping to use this switch as it has the momentary built in which would eliminate the use of that starter button. I am decent enough with electrical, the dyna 3.0 dc1-1 upgrade seems easy enough. If I were to upgrade the coils, removing the ballast resistor how would I wire this aftermarket tumbler.

ID:	863886 Buy a small relay. Run S to one side of relay coil, other side to frame ground. Contact side of relay, B/W from starter, other side to frame ground. That should "flip" the connection from hot to ground for you.

              Diverray,

Ive got coils ordered from ebay. Be a week or so as Im in Canada.
5 pin relay like this? Says 30/40a, bit overkill, but I havent found a 10/20a one.

Use the small relay. I just used that screen shot so you would know how to wire it up. Looking at the relay you want, it will connect the same way. 86 to 85 is the coil for the trigger, 30 and 87 is for the device to switch.

Ok Ill put an order in for that relay. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it. Ill report back in a few weeks hopefully with some success. Maybe a little write up so others can install one of these. Might also be applicable for the use of these waterproof led momentary switches in conjunction with with the stock tumbler. Amperage on this one may be a little low though.

If you use a relay you can use that switch for whatever you want. Horn, starter, etc.

I got the new coils installed. Still having some issues with the ign. With the wiring below I can crank the bike over, turn it on but when I turn the ign off the engine keeps running. Im not sure where my r/w wires go?

                      Red (30) to blue/white
Blue (87), Black (85) to ground (grounded together not separate grounds)
White (86) and both red/white to S on ign
R/Y, Blue and Gray going to A on ign
Red going to B on ign

Both R/W should be on A, not S.
