  • Dang side panels....

    So I am trying out (back to stock) jetting in my 79sf and am out on a very long backroad straight and decide to open it up.

    So I stop completely, feet down, give 'er the revs, work the clutch, and am off, ripping through 3 gears and she's pulling strong. Feels great to notch all the gears at 7500rpm each. I see 90-95 on the speedo and start to slow down.

    Uneventful, mostly. I ride around for another 10 minutes and decide to stop by a bridge and enjoy the scenery.

    That's when I look down and see that my left side panel is gone!

    #!@#$!#!!!

    After about an hour of searching, I found it, probably about where the bike hit 70 the first time. Of course it flipped along the road and scuffed up the nice new black paint job....

    So is there a 79sf side panel in existence with ALL MOUNTING POINTS INTACT?

    Grrrrrrr....... Why are they always broken? So now I'm going to spend a lot of time looking for something with a mounting tab so I don't have to mess with a freaking lame side panel.

    I hate having to tie them to the frame with wire or tape. Geez....

    I just need a panel as my emblems are fortunately in decent shape.

    It sounds like the locking tab on the bottom of your sidecover is broken. If so, follow this series of shots to rebuild it using some 1/8" plexiglas and a good acrylic cement. This is simpler if you have an unbroken one on hand to guide you, but the reference scale will give you the sizes you need....

        Will the right one fit an '80 Special?

        I did about the same thing. My right cover was cracked, but seemed to be holding good. It had fallen off one time, of course right after I just got the custom paint, but I thought that was because my seat was a little loose and bumped it. I have no idea where I lost it, I just got on one morning to go to work and saw that it was gone.
