  • No spark 79 special

It ran when I parked it...lol.

I had the front end off, all wires in the headlight bucket have homes except for a blue (double wire female bullet) and red (single wire female bullet). All fuses look good.
Fixed second gear, adjusted valves and changed the spark plugs caps to NGK.

fuel in the holes but no spark, I tried a stock plug cap and still no dice.

Power is verified to the coil grey and orange leads.

    Any ideas?

Can't be killswitch,. It disconnects lead to coils.

Check the ballast resistor, and then start from the top. Take off seat and tank, turn on ignition and check red/white wire at the resistor for 10.8+ Volts. I would also check the ground wires at the reg/rec to make sure they are good. Ohm check from the screw head to the battery ground, should be less than 2 Ohms. Print off a one page copy of the wire diagram and check off as you follow the wires with the VOM, checking for voltage or Ohm readings as needed.

12+v feeding the ballast resistor from female red/yellow trace bullet and 12+v coming out of the ballast.

Where on the bike is the emergency shut off switch in the diagram?

I found a red/yellow trace male bullet coming out of the harness just in front of the shock mount that doesn't seem have a mate. Any leads (haha, see what I did there) on where this would go?

Maybe I have my wires crossed on the headlight bucket. The bullets I have connected for the 2 dk green female I plugged into the single blk male. The green/yellow trace plugged in to the green/white trace. I downloaded the diagram but it's not helping me much on my phone. I need to go to the office and print an 11

Tip switch in the pic. If you have 12V at ballast resistor, problem is not in the headlight bucket bundle.

The missing lead you ask about. Connects to the load side lug on the starter solenoid. That bypasses the ballast resistor on startup to provide extra spark energy during starting.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I have not had that one hooked up last year but it ran. Weird

I now have spark and she runs!

I found the black box emergency stop what the heck does that black box do?

In the headlight bucket, it looks normal to me Center right signal wire to double dk green
center left signal wire to double brown
My signals were hooked up backwards but left to brown is correct

Front brake switch brown to a brown (but the female harness connection has room for one more wire)

Blue wire female jumper from gauge loom to main harness has no male counterpart.

Red wire female from main harness has no counterpart

It's a tip over switch. Kills the ignition if the bike goes down. There's a test procedure, with a good explanation of function in the service manual.

Good to know it's back to running again.

Nice to hear the oem exhaust note for the first time! Engine sounds happier with the valve adjustment and tensioner reset.

Luckily it was sitting bare with the old riding mower tank ready for the carb sync which was supposed to be done yesterday. Today is a total washout with rain. Hopefully later this week I can sync the carbs, go over all the pressures and see how the trans work played out.

Thanks again everyone for your help! Nice bunch on this site
