Ken, I really appreciate your pictures. I can't begin to tell you how helpful these are compared to just reading text about these procedures.

Yup, Ken's gotten pretty good with his digital camera....

I ordered one from Harbour Freight. I am hoping I can finally establish that the float heights are correct and eliminate that from my carb woes.

I use an old RCBS reloading caliper ( the el'cheapo ) so far it's worked well.

          79sf, 4-1, 6660ft, otherwise stock...

Used my harbor freight digital caliper to work on the floats.

Didn't have my manual with me this weekend but attempted to set floats to 25mm. This reduced the fuel height from what it was before.

I measured as Ken did, with the depth gauge, trying to measure from the highest point, and with consistency, and with gaskets removed.

I also took the time to install 135 mains.

I've been trying to solve a midrange problem, but somewhere in the process, I seemed to have wiped out the bottom end. Well, with today's adjustments, it was about 35 outside and I started it on full choke, it ran that way for about 30 seconds, then I put it on reduced choke. It idled great. Then I eliminated choke and it was good.

Could only take it around the block - sleet rain, etc. Pulls from idle through the bottom end much better, no annoying lug.

I think the float height adjustments did the trick for the bottom end.

Midrange just seems to cut out on me - but when you advance past the cutout, it rips up to 8.5k rpms quick. If I can nail down the midrange, I'll be in business. I will fiddle with the needle position next go 'round for starters, but I think it really may be spark.

I've tested the vacuum advance with a vacuum pump and it seems to go full advance at 7 inches. ??

Anyway, I do like the caliper. Money well-spent.

I do hope everyone that is measuring their float height(s) is measuring both floats in each carb. You can set one at one height and the other float can be different (attached yet independant).

Ben, I corrected my mid-range blubbering by removing the needle jets and cleaning them really well. There was a ton of crud in them.
