  • Final Drive removal

New here, great forum. Just picked up an '80 xs eleven special. Trying to get the diff off with some advice on the old forum, but I must be missing something... Seems to take more than just "remove the four nuits." Saw no mention of it, but it seems to me I will have to remove the upper shock mount in order to get the differential out of the lower shock mount before I can actually pull the final drive apart from the driveshaft. Is that right? Thanks

Yes, just remove the entire left shock from the bike.

Welcome CruiserEddie, Here is a link to a shaft drive manual for the 750s. It’ll get you close.

Eddy, whatever you do, don't snap off the upper shock mount stud or you'll be SOL. The stud is welded to the frame, work the nut loose slowly back and forth with penetrating oil and/or heat.

Thanks Phil. I got it. I was actually a coupler nut with a second stud for mounting the hard bags. Some penetrating oil plus a few hammer taps plus a little time did the trick.

Hey Eastcoaster, thanks for the welcome. Born and raised in the Motor City, but for the past 35 years, I've been hanging my hat in Reno, Nevada where the west is still wild.
