Maximan -- didn't know anybody else who rode a H2 was still alive.....It was better than the H1 however. Years ago there was another thread about the H2. They both tried to kill me a few times before the XS came along. Talking about standing start straight line tho the H2 could cover 1/8 mile real quick.

Used to race a 6 cylinder Honda back in the day -- circa 78 - 79. Nothing formal, just chance meetings. About a toss up as I recall. Nothing else stock could touch either one back then. Roger Reiman built some Harleys that would hurt my H2, so I imagine they would also have played well with the XS.

This thread is timed well. I'm real thankful to have lived thru my youth. Remembering how the road looked thru that little slit between the speedo & tach and still get chills.

Have had several roll-ons with extremely loud but slow Harleys lately, no contest but I did play with them a bit...let them think they were about to take me then waved bye-bye. Hee hee, nyuk nyuk nyuk! Vulcan Tom and I blew by maybe a dozen or so Harleys plus other assorted cruisers on our Saturday ride but some of that was in the twisties.
Shiny side up,

XS1100SF "Rusty", runs great, 96k miles
XS650SJ "The Black Bike", engine from XS650H with 750cc big bore kit, 30k miles

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece, but to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out and defiantly shouting, "WOW, what a ride !" - Sprung

Oh yeah...as long as you could avoid curves and the notorius high speed wobble...they weren't too deadly.

Yep...redlight to redlight their acceleration would bend the mind. Kinda like a overgrown dirt bike...hehehe...I guess that's what they were really.

Well duh!...Reiman was a legend in his own time. If I recall though he was winning on Harley's before the Japs were building big fours...no? Sad he got killed at Daytona.

At times I think I'm still there with this ZRX...hehehehe... It's just too easy to screw it open.

I used to regularly pass H1s and H2s in the twisties on my Matchless 650 which was slow as a slug but handled really well. I particularly remember glancing over at a rider on an H1 as I motored around him on the outside of a tight right-hander up on Mount Tamalpais and noticing the white face of fear! I had my throttle on the stop but he couldn't bring himself to open his just a little more. I once rode a friend's H1 and I found it positively scary. My friend sold it after it spit him off a couple of times. He replaced it with a BSA triple.

Did a runner on my H1 back when I was 17 or 18. Cop did a U-turn lights flashing so I gassed it. Was scraping crazy thru corners and hitting 190 kph on the staight bits. Terrified the whole time. Skidded to a stop and threw the whole bike in the roadside scrub. Lay there sweating and shaking. Cop screams past 1 minute later. Stayed in the scrub till dark. Sneaked back home no headlight. Even the H1 can hustle thru twisties if needed.

Went on my first "longish" trip on the XS yesterday. One of the guys that came has a '93 honda ST 1100. Nice, smooth bike. At one of the last stops we decided to see whos had more. Did a 20 mph horn honk....my XS stayed out in front the whole time, but only by a bike length or so and we only made it into 3rd. We werent going for top speed. My XS has the vetter fairing, trunk, and hard bags, all of wich were full at the time. If we would have switched bikes it would have been pretty even- he's a little bigger than me. It was a great ride by the way, even with the rain!

• In the early 80's shortly after I bought my first 81 special a buddy of mine bought a GPZ750. Despite the CC difference he laughed at my bike as being old-fashioned and told anyone who would listen that his GPZ would eat it for breakfast. When we finally went head to head I smoked him easily. To his credit he was a pretty good sport about it and had nothing but good things to say about the XS after that.

• I have an 81SH in near mint condition.Smoked a 96 1200 Harley that had some goodies.we both shifted to 4th at 70 mph and held them on the stops into fifth. At no time did the Harley have a hope either on acceleration or at speed.Smiled though when read some of posts on V-Max.My buddy had one, tried them and the V-Max ruled .................period!Remember V-Max has 145 hp,XS has 95 .tops plus I should think is a little heavier than the V-Max.

• There's ways to compete with a V-max, don't forget a V-max can smoke modern 1litre sportsbikes in a straightline drag . Even ZX12's and busas if they're havin' a bad day. I'll never sell my XS11, the only way I'll get a new modern bike is if the beast blows up. I'm tryin' hard but it's pretty much impossible to blow up an XS11 motor unless you're doin' something wrong.
