About a year ago I snapped up a no key 79 Special w/7200mi off of Craigslist that was close to me. It came with an 80 parts bike that was pretty complete. I estimated that for about $800 more, I could get it back on the road. The wallet opening started with a key from the net for about $14, an ounce of MMO in the cylinders to sit a few days before I even confirmed that it wasn't locked up.
So the short list of what it needed was (from top to bottom):
Grips, clean handlebar controls, front brake master & calipers rebuild with new pads & caliper bolts, fork oil changed, gas cap vent cleaned up, tank derusted, petcocks replaced because screens were beat (thanks kboehringer ), octy rebuilt, air cleaner plus patch hole in bottom of airbox, battery, carbs (I sent them out, floats & diaphragms were junk $$$), plugs, headlight relay bypass, couple of bulbs, oil change all 3 holes, added oil cooler from parts bike, starter was slow when hot, parts bike starter woks good, rear brake master/caliper rebuilt, new rear pads. Found a $20 Craigslist Kawasaki Kerker header 4:1 megaphone exhaust local and replaced the missing baffle rusted out Mac muffler. 2 new Shinko 777's
In deep enough now to make it what I would like, apparently a convertible bagger was on my mind 1979 sport tour maybe. Craigslist strikes again, local Krauser rack system for an XS. Found some nice Krauser side cases and top Shad55 with Admore lighting on fleabay. Added some Bestem liner bags just because. 2manybikes helped me with a Plexi fairing. All of the bags are keyed on and the windshield comes off with 4 thumbscrews. Added seat beads to combat the cheese grater that is a 41yo original vinyl seat cover.
Runs great but second gear needs a massage to stop that infamous issue and looks to have a fork seal leak now.
