  • Engine installation....made easy!

Don't know my way around your site very well, but installed replacement engine today(took about 10 min.) short of bolting everything back in place. Installing it from the right side, just as removing it, as it comes across, position u-joint towards right side. Then as engine comes across frame, with u-joint boot attached to drive line- swing arm assembly, hook corner of boot over out-put yoke, and with one more lift across frame, engine drops in place just loke it's supposed too. If you roll engine beside the frame on one of those little carts you set on, its a perfect match, two can slide it across frame with ease, and I'm only 5'10'', 170lbs! Looking at what you have to do, it kinda looks intimidating at first. Anyways, gonna finish it up tomorrow and see how the engine runs.....should be good, as checked compression after installing and they all were 140psi! Let you-all know if all that effort was worth it after tomorrow. Gonna leave the 110's in my carbs, see what happens.....should be good as I'm at 5,000ft elev. Again, THANKS for all the good advice here!

      Engine installation......done!

Hey there Risky.......got er' done tonight bout 7pm! All the little stuff is time consuming, carbs, air filter housing, buffin' out all of exhaust system before installation, oil cooler, fairing mount, fairing and lowers......lot of parts to the ole' Venturer 1100!.......The best part....this thing rips like it did the day I bought it new! The only down side is under extremely hard acceleration second gear occasionaly won't hold well. Other than that, could'nt beat it for $200, and it was clean enough to eat out of when I installed the oil pump! Left the carbs with the 110 mains on all four and left my float levels where I had set em' for the old tired engine, which is 27mm. Rode it bout 20 miles altogether on new plugs, pulled them back at home and there all a light whitish tan.....perfecto for the 5,000 ft. elev. here....and it pulls extremely hard all the way up to 8,500rpm! Except for the second gear glitch, almost sure it would run with my Honda ST 1100 for the first three gears. Even at that it'll knock the mirrows of any Harley with a big bore kit, and some smaller cc crotch rockets. Think this engine has pretty low miles on it as it has 140-143lbs. of compression on all four cyl....not bad for 5,000ft in the air! It is also an 81' motor...so it's correct year for the bike since Yamaha is only manufacturer that engine vin. no. don't have to match frames. Anyways, for Poker runs and what have ya.....with tunes also it'll be fun..and there's one coming up here Nov....so will also get a chance to try out the Hippo hands when they get here in a few days.....Again a big THANKS to all for all the input, as I added that all to my own 35+ yrs. in the automotive world building and 'tweakin' high performance muscle cars. THANKS!.......Brant. (P.S... considered tackling swapping spacer to other side of second gear..considering is bout as far as that'll go...body's too sore after doing engine R&R!)

          engine installation

Yeppers....second just kinda keeps it rollin, without rollin it on hard, then third....beats pullin' motor!.....and beats alot of youngins' who don't have a clue what 1100 stands for! Rode into Utah today on interstate bout 150 miles total, then refilled, got 37mpg at a constant just under 70mph which was at about 43-4400 rpm. Still need to have carbs calibrated equal as it pops ocassionaly out exhaust at idle and deceleration...should improve all around performance and mileage. Will see if I can have a friend take some pics and get em' on here if we can out how to do all that.

            Hey motoman,
You can do the 2nd gear fix without pulling the motor. You'd have to stand the bike up on it's rear tire to get to the oil pan with that faring on but it would be an easy task to someone with your experiance.

I even figured out how to do it using the tech tips and I've now got an extra 5.000 miles on my Midnight special doing the dremel fix found in the tech tips. Glad to see you got your old girl bach up and running!!

              engine installation

Hey there Don, thanks for the moral support, and reminding me of the tech. info on fixin that. Fairing is less than 5 min. to pull; 4 bolts and unplug, can even leave the lowers on. Maybe someday when I'm bored to tears I'll pull the pan and swap the spacer to other side of second gear so those 'dogs' engage farther.....key words tho, "bored to tears", meanwhile I'll just peek past the windshield at a 100 for the tears....whatcha think? Good hearin' from ya, and the ridin' weather's perfect here. Good way to work out the soreness from changin' that motor too!
