  • fork seal allen bolt

When I removed the allen bolt from the bottom of the fork slider there appeared to be some silicone sealer on the threads.....does anybody else around here put sealer on the threads when reassembling? Seems like a good idea to me as long as you don't get too much in there.

    Randy,

That 'sealer' is threadlocker. The allen bolt has a copper washer on it. The washer does the sealing.

Threadlocker is an even better idea! Thanks!

It might be silacone sealer. In the shop we used to only remove the slider when changing fork seals. Then put silacone sealer around the bolt to hold the fork oil then spin the bolt in with an air-wrench.

This saves a lot of time in the shop and the sealer is only there to keep the oil in the slider during instalation.

I may just put a little silicone on there instead of the threadlock.....this time all I had to do was unnscrew the bolt, no extra tool required. Just in case I have to do this again I'd rather not argue with threadlock.

I wouldn't loctite it either. If it actually held, it would make them a bitch to remove. It 25 years of working on bikes, I've never heard of one of these screws coming loose.
