  • Shifter mechanism question

Another dumb question from a new XS owner. I am missing 5th gear and found a peice in the tech section about a dowel in the shifter mechanism that is located under the shifter cover and sometimes falls out. The Dumb question is : Is the area under the shifter cover dry or should I plan on an oil change when I go to investigate this over the weekend?

    5th Gear Problem, lost pin

Missing 5th gear is from the missing pin and deformed washer holding the pins. The area is dry. Take the washer and another pin to the dealer and get new pin and washer. Or order from Zamontti Motors (Spellg). Now think about where the lost pin is hiding?

Yeah, that's the really scary part. Since it's dry though, it is hopefully just laying in a recess somewhere.

        **CORRECTION!**

The shifting chamber IS an oil chamber, it's not dry. It has and requires an oil tight gasket seal, so you do need to be careful when taking that cover off. You can lay the bike on the right side, and so you don't necessarily have to drain the oil!
See picture below, sorry it's not sharply focused, but you can see the large oil return galley/hole in the middle of the bottom section!

If the dowel is missing, and you can't find the dowel in that side, it may have gotten washed down into the tranny pan on the bottom, and so then you'll need to drain the oil and pull the bottom pan off to find it! Good Luck!

Thanks TC (used to love that cartoon, guess how old I am). I figured I could lay it over to the right, but since I just got the bike last weekend, an oil change is probably a good idea. Hopefully I will find the dowell in the small indent below the retaining washer. Of course with my luck, it made it all the way to the pan.
