I can't remember what thread I read it in, and search only comes up with a zillion threads, so I still have a question. Would swithing to 70's XS cams provide performance gains all around? Is there a downside (emissions don't count)?

The '78 & '79 cams are a little "hotter" than the later models. They will go in, and the later head has bigger valves, so you will notice the power increase. I don't know of any downside, as long as the bearing surface of the cam and heads are good.
If you are going that far, you may want to try and find the earlier carbs. They can be easily tuned, unlike the carbs you probably have now.

Cam bearings?
Asimple question from a simple simon> Has anyone machined the heads and cam holders to add bearings to the cams. Obviously Yamaha did not want to go to the expense and their design seems to hold up fo many miles. Just a thought because inquiring minds want to know.
