  • Choke/Enrichment Cable?

As I walked around my new beast, shaking my head and muttering to myself, I noticed that I don't have a choke lever on the left controls. Did someone do a "midnight requisition" on the bike when she was sitting outside for months? or is it a manual lever on the leftside of the carbs that I can't figure out what it does.
I jiggled it which did nothing, no battery so jiggling is OK

Reason I am asking is there is a left control setup for sale on ebay and it doesn't have a choke lever either.

The xj has a choke cable on the left side handle bar switch pod. It is on the bottom of the switch assy, and it has a thumb lever. Are you needing one?

      Hey Jack,

The choke lever just screws into the bottom of the left hand control set, it may have been removed or fell off? Look under the control set and see if there is a hole where the lever would bolt to!? On the carbs, that lever should be in between #2 and 3 carbs, not on the end of the bank!

The Starter lever assembly is still available from BikeBandit, for a little over $7.00! The cable is $8.40.

          Okay Jack,

The Xs has a choke lever on the left side of the carbs, but the handle part may have broken off as they often do! You'll want to spray some WD40 on that choke arm/rod that runs across to all four carbs, they get corroded and stiff, and cause much more resistance, and that's what adds to folks pulling the lever out too hard and bending and finally breaking the handle off of the lever. If you'll do a search in the Member's Forum for choke lever, you'll find a thread I posted about a repair replacement for one that is broken off!?

I think I have used the wrong description of what I wanted to find out. On the XS1100 Standard, is there a choke control on the handlebars or do you use the lever on the carbs? I've looked at the fiche and don't see a bar mounting for the choke.

Sorry for not being more accurate (its a curse)

I have a 79 F. Choke lever is on the left side o' the carbs. Nothing on the handlebars.

Its tight as a drum but I am being very careful with it. Its all there so that's another plus but it doesn't move so when I get into the carbs I will see whats up.

                    Thanks T.C.

                      FWIW...

On the XJ, the choke cable connects to the carbs at #4 carb. As you sit on the bike, if you look (or reach down) you can see and/or manipulate the choke without using the cable.

During a recent carb rebuild, noticed that the carb choke plunger was sticking in the carb bore on reassembly - even after a thorough cleaning with Berryman’s carb cleaner!

Solution: Liberal application of Sea Foam Deep Creep on all carb parts and carb body (exc. diaphram) during assembly process.

So for the sticking choke lever, be sure to check the choke plunger on each carb as well as the choke arm/rod.

Can't recommend Sea Foam Deep Creep enough, although I have not tried as an engine fogging oil yet.
