B] Just picked up a nice 79 XS1100 special, was setting a while, so I sat down and disasembled the carbs for cleaning, got the thing all back together, stuck on some pod filters and put in a new battery and it fired right up. after a little while it was running great, so I took it for a ride, the thing pulls great up to about 5000, but anything after that it wants to sputter, its got a kerker header on it and I noticed that one of the header pipes (second from the left) is smashed on the bottom, it looks like it's closed about 60%, would that have anything to do with it cutting out after about 4 to 5 grand ?

Hey there Dean,
Welcome to the FORUM. Glad you aren't shy about diving in and working on these beasts! The carbs scare most folks! The key item you mentioned about the work you did was that you put on "POD FILTERS" ! ! There are some out there that have a prominent lip around where they mount onto the carbs, and they actually restrict the air flow thru the vents and ports in the inlet bell!
Take them off and do a quick run and see how it behaves! IF it easily goes over 5K....should run up to 8+ with NO hesitation, then you know that the filters are the culprits! Some folks have trimmed the lip back a bit to unrestrict the airflow, and so they could keep their filters!?
IF it still falls flat on it's face with the pod filters off, then further investigation of the carbs may be in order!? I don't think the partially crimped pipe would have that much affect on it!

Thanks T.C. !!
I just picked (stole) this bike up last week for $250.
Hell of a deal, has a new tank, cosmeticly I would give it a good 8 on a 1-10. Previous owner said it had an electrical problem and it wouldn't start, I cleaned the plugs turned it over and it fired. the problem was filthy carbs. It has a few minor issues, like a sticky rear caliper, and a leaky cam chain tensioner, but I'll get to those next.
Thanks again, I'm sure will talk again

jett time
go to a 135.0 main jett, also find a tiny washer that will fit under the needle ,to raise it(xj's don't have adjustable needles like the xs's do ) you will be able to go all the way to the end of the tach with this set up.1982 XJ 1100
