  • 80 XS 11 SG Carbs

I have had my carbs apart two or three times. I set the floats level and at the correct drop. Ive had them in berryman cleaner, sprayed air in all orifices, and had several people do the same thing at least 3 additional times. The jets have been dropped down to try to keep the RICH condition I am having. The needles on the 80 model have also been adjusted. I can not get my bike to quit running rich. 1 2 3 4 all running rich. The mileage is terrible, plugs dont last long, dark brown to blacken condition. Ive ran this bike for the last three years and i am just about to pull my hair out(what little i have) any suggestions out there.

    What elevation do you ride?
What type and condition is the exhaust system, any leaks, baffle OK, no cracks?
What kind of air filter(?) do you have? Is it clean?
    Are the carbs '80 vintage?
How many round holes are in the perimeter of the inlet bell of each carb?
What kind of pilot jets and what is the number?
What are the air jet numbers?
What are the main jet numbers?
Have you tried to figure out the running condition that cause overly rich by coloring sets of plugs?

If the jets have been changed, it is very possible thay have been replaced with K&L jets which use an entirely different numbering system than the original Mikunis. You may think you have gone to a smaller jet when in fact you have gone way larger.

You float setting could still be an issue too. If every thing else is as it should be and you're still rich, drop the floats 2mm and try again. Don't get hung up about what is 'correct', but look for what works. That is how I finally solved an extremely rich running condition in Tsunami - by lowering the floats to what worked and leaving everything else 'bone stock'. Tsunami's mileage immediately picked up by 10mpg!

Could be running 78 jets in 80 carbs?

P.S. I'd say to remove any inline filters, but my life would become a living hell dodging flak from the filter gangs of XSMike and co... better leave them in

i appreciate all of the different avenues that i must go down to answer skids reply. Im not sure what elevation that i am riging at most but it is usually level terrain, I have a k& N Filter that is clean, I have a 4 x 2 Mac Exhaust, no leaks at the heads as far as i can tell, i am pretty sure the carbs are 80's, i have only ran three sets of plugs thru it, i haven't tore down the carbs recently to be able to tell you i will have to do this again because a mehanic has been in since i was and probably changed the jets some at least.

Bingo! If a mechanic has been in and done any jetting, you can just about guarantee s/he put in K&L jets and that's why you're way too rich. Time to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. Don't be scared, there's lots of people here at the forum to talk you through this....

Thanks Ken,, Now Where does the Yellow wire go

thanks Ken, No it want be a problem I am far from scared, I usually know just enough to get myself in deep s--t. Thanks for all the moral support. I only want my bike to run the way it should. Sometimes asking a 25 y/o machine to perform like a new one is stretching it. But, we will see. Oh, had another post about where the yellow wire goes on the harness associated with the alternator. I wired in a alternator after the wires broke into on the original. Anyway, I have 3 white that come from the coils and I have wired them back up, but i can't remember where the yellow goes. Looking at the schmwtic it appears to go to the switch but I am not sure. I can only find yellow wire in the harness way towards the front of the harness. About the area of the coils, But there is no evidence of anyone messing with that particular wiring and i dont want to cut it if that is not where it goes. ETC ETC
