Howdy,
Finally getting on with the SF i got in a front end with. First set of forks/front suspension I've dismantled, and - is it just me, or now that I know how they're put together... well, I am amazed they work at all! Just a couple of pinches from the crown and the bracket around the stanchions? Go figure!
Anyways - I write cause the crash was bad enough to bend the right stanchion. Having found suitable replacements for both left and right forks, the new stanchions do not slide into the crown very easily (but they pass through the bottom alright.) Should I assume that either it and the lower bracket are bent? I /can/ insert the stanchions all the way in - flush to the top, however, it is a very stiff fit. I do have a replacement for both, but I will then be getting into some serious frankenstein territory (the crown sets the bars back about an inch, and up a little higher. The seller said it was from an sf... The lower looks like maybe it was from a standard?) I've never done this kind of work and am curious how difficult it normally is to replace forks?
Also, I've seen some online references for how to check your alignment using strings and weights, which seem all well and good, but, should I just install the Daytona fork brace I had and see how she rolls?
Thanks!
