Lowering can be expensive. I did an 81 SH (Foster Child) for SWMBO earlier this year. I had to buy new, 11 inch shocks for the rear, and I had to locate some barback handlebar risers, so I could slide the fork tubes up one inch in the triple clamps. The barbacks are close to $100 if you have to buy new ones, and they are very difficult to find. I got lucky when a member who had read about me trying to find some, had just given me a set. Bless his heart. After lowering, you MUST shorten the side stand by at least one inch, or the bike will be too upright when on the stand, and it may fall over. The center stand will need shortening also if you want to use it, or unless you like 'gorilla-ing" it up on the stand, and then it is a real bitch to get it down off the center stand also. I tried using the center stand after lowering the bike...it was a bitch, so take my word for it. A good welding/fab shop will be able to shorten the stands. The center stand is quite involved though.
Here is a link to my lowering post.

I just got done rebuilding an 81 Special, that my son had wrecked 2 years ago. I not only lowered the rear with 11" shocks, but raised the front with 6" oversize tubes. Marty A has seen it, ridden it, and now named it, Magic. It is getting new skins this week, and XJ rims. I will see if someone can post pics for me next week.Highlander
