  • transmission rumbles

Hi i put this down to it being 25 years old shaftie etc transmission was a bit rumbly at 90 mph but nothing major, then last week rode it 30 miles stopped at where i was going rode another ten
stopped off ,got back on couldnt really select the gears at all??
on 5 thousand revs it ran free with no rumbles but abvove and below it
sounded terminal to say the least!!!

Changed the oil to 20/50 as i had 10/30 i think before ,for 1500 miles use

it selects real nice !! revs clean and pulls like hell again on the clutch!!

still got slight rumble 4 - 5 thousand revs tho??

deffinately sounds transmission?? any idea's appreciated

    Thanx

Does it do it at 4-5k RPM in all gears or just at that speed? Does it do it in 4th gear at 4,500 RPM? How about 3rd gear?
Check your middle drive for gear oil.

Right then i know i should have done it as matter of course!!I dropped the middle gear oil today (was clear on the dipstik wen checked and up to level so left it)anyway dumped it out and it stank!!! couple of filings stuck on the magnet and sludge and the oil was thick and gooey and wow so smelly!! never smelled oil like that!! greased up in the boot ,greased the nipple pumped a fair bit in there (by the rear wheel) dropped the final drive oil wasnt as bad as middle gear but needed changeing for sure!!

bike is smoooooooooth precise on gears no rumbles pulls like an express train now just pulls and pulls and pulls and pulls some more

AMAZIN best days ridin i have ever had on a bike

i am going to change all the oils again every 500 mls twice then do it every thousand after that

I am soooooooooo happy with my bike ,i thought the gearbox had died a death!!

very lucky !! very, very very lucky!!!

thanx Pat basic doh!! doh!! doh!! ,lazy fek didnt deserve it to be ok did i ,really???!!!

          Hey Gaffer

Try using a synthetic gear oil in the drives. It seems to last longer between changes, doesn't stink, and it is much easier to pour into the components. I've been using it for about four years now.

Always dubiouse of synthetic oils ,maybe unduly??

say's he who didn't bother changeing the old crappy oil for 18mths and wondered why his tranny sounded harsh!!

Will think on that thanx John ,was a pig to get in with the airboxin the way!!

tipped into a jug to get exact measurement and messed about with a funnel!!

              Gaffer

One trick I've used to get the oil to flow is to pre-measue some into another gear oil squeeze bottle, and warm it in a pot of hot water like you would a baby bottle. That will thin it to the about the same viscosity as 20 weight oil. I also use a piece of small hose attached to the tip of the squeeze bottle and stick the end of the hose into the fill hole. Much cleaner that way. The middle and final drive take 10 US oz or 300cc's. I have never been able to get the final drive to take more than four oz tho...
I only change gear oils once a year.

was lookin for bottle to empty xact amount into didnt hav a spare

i want to change and change oil again just to clear the crap stuff thru

1000 mile changes just to preserve as long as poss there after

                small price to pay!!

John she's got a new lease of life now and boy did i have a smile in that bash hat
didnt want to stop ridin !! never felt that way always had niggles interuptin the flow of ridin the bike!!

got some more tinkering to do ie brake caliper over hauls, master cylinders as well

carb rubbers and maybe sync the carbs, feel ok just want to chek em!!

for 25year old bike these are flippin awesome when on song!!
