Hey guys. I'm 21 years old and for some reason about a month ago I decided that I wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle. I really had my heart set on some sort of sport bike. I took the Motor Cycle Safety Foundation class, and found it to be a great learning experience.

Lately I've been riding my mom's boyfriends 1980 XS11 Special and I'm hooked . I realize it's probably not the best beginner bike, but I'm a big guy and felt very comfortable with it after 10 miles or so. I've mostly just rode it around town, but I did do a 100mile trip with it. What a blast! I've been into muscle cars as a teenager, and I'm a pilot, but nothing compares to the fun I've been having with his bike. I find it to be a very versatile bike as it's very very quick, but it's also big enough to go on long trips without getting tired. One problem we've been having is every once in a while it sounds like a small backfire, or stumble coming out the left side pipe. It also has a hard time idling sometimes, so we think a carb rebuild is in order. Any guesses?

Anyways to make a long story short, instead of buying the crotch rocket, I'm looking at an XS11 tomorrow, and I'm talking with a guy who has a teal colored XJ11 for sale (was teal a stock color?). My friends with crotch rockets think I'm nuts, but I don't care I think these bikes are cool.

So with that said is there anything I should be looking for when buying one of these bikes?

There's a ton of information here about the XS - you could spend days getting through it all. However, be sure to check out at least these two articles. The first is the used bike FAQ . The second is what to look for on a neglected XS11 . These will get you started.

BTW - teal was not one of the stock colours. This link will take you to a list of the factory colours for the various model/year combinations.
