  • Question about the guage cluster.

    Hey all.

    Got a question.

I have a 79 xs 1100 SF that i wrecked on a few weeks ago.
I trashed the spedo, tach and indicator lights.

    Here is my question.

Will the guages for an 80 Special (the 85 mph spedo) fit and work on my 79 Special.
I found someone that will sell me the whole cluster of guages. they want 135 for the 79 (with the 160 spedo) and 85 for the 80 (with the 85 spedo)
The main part I am worried about is the wires, will they connect to the same connectors or would i have to cust and splice from my original ones?

    Thanks for the help?

I am quite sure they would work, but I have never done it. They guages them selves will work, and I think all the lights were the same. If not your harness could be swapped on to the new gauges. You would have to get used to a slow-o-meter like us 1980 owners.

what is funny is i have seen both 85 speedos and 160 speedos on both STDs and Specials for the 79 model year. I have a 79 Special and it has an 85 mph speedo on it. I plan to swap it for a 78 STD cluster with the 160. I hope it works. If the wiring is different it should not be to hard to rewire the clkuster to work right.

I put a 120 Speedo from a 650 twin on my 81SH, I wasn't using the self cancelling turn signal circuit, and that was the only extra wires for the Speedo, aside from the 2 bulb wires, so the Speedo shouldn't be a problem. Not as familiar with the Tach, but from what I've read, they are the same...all electronic for the XS's. Mine still works great, although quite weathered!!!

          wiring differences

Lucky me, I just spent most of the afternoon sorting through a bin of old speedos at a local wrecking yard. The only major difference I could see between the '80s speedo and some of the other years was the number of ground wires. The '80 SG speedo has three wires with one of them ( I think) being the ground. Many of the other speedos from other years had four wires with two of them being ground wires. It should be pretty easy to splice the two grounds together.
