  • Standard HEADLIGHT

Okay here goes, my stuborness is gonna show on this one!
I bught a standard headlight from ebay o put my 80G back to stock and low beam burned out after a few weeks. I checked the threads about headlights and found one where it was suggested to take a regular car sealed beam and afix brackets to it. Those of us who have a standard know the brackets are integral to the light. Well I thought that was a good fix but if that one burns out then the same thing all oer again. So I experiemented a little. I removed the sealed beam and hacksawed the electrical connector off, shook the inner bulb around until the pieces were small enough to come out the hole. Now looking at this I thouht I have a couple of choices. Remember the sealed beam has the brackets on it. (1) Take a standard H4 bulb mount and epoxy it to the back of the assembly, then you can contunue o use it and replace only the H4 bulb. Choice # (2) (and this is wha I have actually tried). The brackets are part of the metal back shell so I broke out the glass front lens and hacked away at the whole back assy with metal cutting shears down to the edge where te brackets are. Then I speant time carefully grinding it all down until there was just the very edge with the brackets was left. It resembled the front chrome ring that goes around the sealed beam but with the brackets. Okay that chrome ring has 4 tabs that bend over to hold it to the front of the lens. I was going to use those tabs to hold the back ring I created with the brakets on it. It he same size as the sealed beam because it was the sealed beam.Thats the problem! Now I started to sandwiched the new car sealed beam between the front chrome and the ring (with brackets) I created. The one thing my stubborness did not think about was the ring is the same size as the sealed beam because it was the sealed beam. Too small to fit around he back of the beam. I am still gonna look for a fix for this cuase I'm stubborn. Oh the moral of the story is Don't try this cuase I already did and it don't work! Hope you all get a good laugh outta this one. I'm lookin for a H4 lens assembly, I know they are still out there. If you have the same problem and you look on ebay and find it please let me win?

    Hello all,

My fix works for now, I had to cut a section out of the ring so it would fit. It's in there vicariously but its on. I bid on a halogen lens on ebay from Eau Claire Cycle shop in WI. arrived today, but now I need the collar. Where can I get the locking collar for the back of this lens that locks in the halogen bulb. Anybody got one or know where to get one? Please help. Dan

Answer to myself I guess. I checked and Halogen bulb #9003 used on certain year and model autos, imports toyota, nissan, suzuki, isuzu, mitsubishi, mercedes, infiniti. Can check to see if any of the retainers will work on the yamaha 2h7-84320-AO-00 halogen lens. Also the #9003 and H4 halogen bulbs appear to be identical. H4 bulb is listed for several make and model motorcycles including yamaha, kawasaki, Harley Davidson, etc... I will check those applications for a suitable locking collar that might work. It sure would be great to find a Yamaha dealer that still had it in stock. Yamaha bulb holder P/N is 2H7-84371-00-00.

Afermarket halogen converson lens' use a wire type retainer which is part of the lens assy for the H4 (9003) bulb. Aslo found the 1983 FJ1100J uses a locking collar but don't know if it will work on the XS1100 standard lens.

            Hey there 80g hardbagger,

I thought this was gonna be my exclusive posting! Thank you for the offer, I really appreciate that so much. Are we talking a sealed beam assy ? I haven't yet finished all the research I want to do on this, but I can feel it is going the route of some kind of work around for it. I know the sealed beams are still available from old stock but the H4 Halogen should give better visibility at night. I origially thought the wire clip was separate but it seems it is part of the lens so I will have to manufacture my own out of piano hinge wire or something else with tension. I think it has to be high temp resistant cause the H4 will be a heat generator. Fall is here and still have some riding left before winter storage. PM me or post a reply. My email is ddelciellojr@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Are 9003 auto bulbs the exact same as the H4 for our bikes?

I looked at the specs printed on a H4 nad 9003 bulb from sylvania at the local auto parts. All the numbers on the bulbs appeared to be axact olny separate packaging. Double check for yourself but I beleive it's the same. Shoot me if I'm wrong, I'm sorry.

H4/9003/HB2 Halogen bulbs are same specs.
                    (12V)( 55/60 Watts)( Base P43t)
                    Check www.suvlights.com

IF YOU UPGRADE TO HIGHER INTENSITY ie.. 9003st OR HIGHER WATTAGE BE CAUTIOUS OF THE INCREASED HEAT GENERATED BY THESE UPGRADES. AT LEAST 14 GAGE WIRES WOULD BE NEEDED. I DON'T KNOW WHAT GAGE IS STOCK FOR THESE BIKES HEADLAMP.

I'm not yelling here just want to caution all.

Can any ellectricians out there confirm heavier gage wiring reuqirements?

After trying to contact stanley electric to get info on the standard halogen headlight I am waiting for a reply concerning technical drawings for the assy. Stanley Electric (U.S.) in Ohio didn't start producing automotive lighting until 1985. The Halogen lens assy was offered in 1980, so that eans it was probably mnufactured in Japan or offshore/overseas for them.

I found a site on the web that has some xs11 parts. I ordered the bulb holder, mounting reflectors, and a standing handle. Last thing I think I will need to put her back to stock will be the seat insignia. Waiting impatiently for these parts to arrive. You can check for other parts by yamaha p/n at temeculamotors.com.

Called to check on my parts yesterday. I was told "Just a minute" Then the dreaded "I'm sorry" Temeculamotors.com does not carry NOS for XS1100's. They had a web guru that did not properly cross reference thier parts on hand with microfiche. Sorry for posting if you tried them for parts. I'm back to square one. I got the headlight bulb (H4) to stay in using paper clips. It's in pretty tight but I thin I need a dust boot to keep out debri and moisture.

Took her/him (no name for her/him yet) for a spin to the store last night. First ride at night with the new H4 headlight. AWSOME difference. Bright white light, high visibilty, clear view, safe drive at cruising speeds. Low beam extends to about 5 or 6 car lengths. High beam lights up everything for 1/4 mile? No more yellow sealed beam!

                          Happy Night Rider now!
