Rusty Low Fuel Meter Gizmo

I have begun working on my rusty tank. I removed the low fuel meter to find that it is completely rusted with junk on it. I am cleaning it off best I can.

Can this piece be salvaged? Will it work again?

If it does not work, I figure I will just use it to plug the hole.

I will spend some more time cleaning it.

I know of no source for the fuel sending unit for standard model or special. With the LARGE tank you have use your trip meter as your fuel gauge stop every 200 miles put in gas.
