Wasn't that about the time the feds put the Harley tarriff on anything bigger then 750s? Might have something to do with it.

Well, I don't know when the 'harley tariff' took effect, but in 84 Yamaha brought out the FJ1100, but the big Suzukis and Kawasaki's were still out there. It doesn't make sense to not have a big Flagship bike for a few years in the US market. I also have heard that there was no XJ11 offered in the UK at all.

        '84 XS650

Similarly in the States people are unaware of the '84 XS650 Heritage Specials sold in Canada, these bikes are nearly identical to the '83 Heritage Special but with cast wheels instead of gazillion spoke rims and with kilo speedos. There have long been unconfirmed rumors of an '85 XS650 possibly sold in Germany or other European markets, unfortunately Yamaha has not been forthcoming with production figures. Perhaps the XS11 was produced for other markets as well?

The Harley tariff went into effect in the spring of '82.

I traded my XJ in on a '83 Venture in June of '83 and they had two identical Ventures there and one was $1000 more than the other because of their import dates.

I really liked that Venture, but I only have owned one of them. I'm on my third XJ.
