  • 2 bikes, 2 problems; problem #2

Definitly not a good motorcycle weekend.

This bike is an 81h, leaking oil when running from just to the right (As I sit on the bike) of the (I think) Cam Shaft tensioning thing on the front of the engine. I limped the bike home, that whole area got pretty dirty. I was too drained to clean and re-assess (This was last night). I did run the RPMs up higher than I ever have before on the bike not long before the issue developed (Trying to pass a FIB who was doing the "I'll go 45 in a 55, until some one tries to pass me, then I will floor it" deal on a little 1 1/2 laner)

Hmm, there was a lot of not-importent info there. Sorry.

Anyway, this leak seem sbad enough I am tempted to just take the bike to the local Vintage Shop for repair, but thought I would ask for ideas here first.

    Thanks again

    Andy

There should be a rubber coated brass plug in the end of the cam chain tensioner. Is it missing? Could be leaking there and blowing back on the engine. That plug is known to pop out. Cheap fix. Also there is a gasket under the tensioner that could be leaking...

Also, if you are leaking at the oil line on the BACK of the engine..that goes between the block and the head...if that top fitting is leaking it will run through the cooling/air passages to the front of the engine. Really!

Otherwise, I suppose you could have lost your gasket between the jugs and case, but that's really unusual....

Yep, I'd vote for the cam tensioner plug. As Dan says, they commonly pop out, or loosen enough to leak. If missing, you'd lose quite alot of oil.

Get a new plug and seal it with silicone. Or just fill the hole wiht RTV. There are several threads (do a search) about how to seal this.

No, The plug is still there. I had that problem before, on the SG, and it never leaked oil like it is now. It also seem to be from the side of that area, near the adjusting screw. Is there a gasket there?

As I sit at work (Driving around, mostly, but occasional internet access), I wonder if there is a gasket between the top of the engine (With the cylinders) and th ebottem? Could that be leaking?

There is a gasket there...but it's really rare for it to leak...check the oil line on the back of the motor...top fitting. If it's leaking there it runs to the front of the engine (VERY difficult to see where it's running).

Okay, I will check that tonight.

I am guessing the best way to check it is to remove the tank? I need to do that anyway, but am asking. A quick search does not show me a diagram of oil lines on an xs

Yah, the easiest way is to remove the tank...it's just a copper line w/banjo fittings that runs from the block to the head...pretty much in the center of the back of the engine. If that top banjo fitting is loose or cracked, oil will drip off the front of the engine.

It can also be hard to tell where things are truely leaking if you've been moving...as the wind really does whip the stuff around.

If it's not the banjo bolt or the cam tensioner, try cleaning it up, then dusting with baby powder and running the engine (careful not to overheat). That will help you locate the source of a hard to find leak....

The oil line Dan refers to is a steel line at the rear of the motor that runs from the crankcase, near the oil pressure sending unit, up between #3 and #4 carburetor intakes, to the rear of the cylinder head. You can see the connection to the head from either side without removing the tank, although that would make it clearer. You should be able to tell if it is leaking from that connection.

The screw on the right side of the cam tensioner (actually a lock bolt) has a small o-ring to prevent leaks, but from your description, I doubt that much oil could be leaking from there. Ditto for the gasket between the tensioner and cylinder.

No leakage at the steel line, but I did find a completely fouled spark plug for cyclinder #4 (I thought the roughness was from the lake of good oil, but since I filled and checked it last night I had a doubt, and a cold pipe comfirmed it).

Would this be a cause for oil leaking? No, I didn't think so. All well.
