  • minor at this stage, but...

i'm just getting to start repair/restoration of my xs11, kind of mapping things out in my head before starting (hey, i'm an engineer, i over-plan EVERYTHING) one thing that annoys me a bit is that my throttle, clutch and front brake cables are stuck. i know it will be a while before i need them, but like i said, it annoys me. will a penetrating oil free them or would it be cheaper in the long run to replace them now and be done with it? the throttle is what bugs me the most. if i'm going to re-build/clean the carbs (step 2 in my master plan) then i'd like to see the throttle actually move!

First, Front Brake Cable? It has hydraulic disks.

If there is any doubt about the throttle cable, replace it. Not a cool thing to let off the throttle and not have the bike slow down.

the cables are cheap and easy to replace. I like the order in the other post that you made. Tear down the carbs, replace the cables when you re-assemble, get the motor running and then tear into brakes. Not really that much work to get driving unless you are some perfectionist engineer! Also don't get too crazy until you think about new tires.
