  • Leaking Oil At Bottom Of Motor

    Hello,

I am leaking oil everywhere these days. The oil is leaking out the top cover (I bought a gasket to replace that and plan on putting it in today). It is also leaking out of the bottom of the engine where the cylinders join the crankcase. Is there any way to tighten things down to see if this fixes the problem? Is there a quick fix without taking it all apart and replacing that gasket? The bike sat a while before I bought it, and now that it is getting some use, I think that is why these problems are coming about. I am not sure if I am ready to tackle a big job like pulling the entire engine apart. If I need to replace that lower gasket, how hard is it?

    Thanks All!

My E was leaking at the cylinder base just below the camchain tensioner. This area is under no pressure, just oil running from the head back to the oilpan (inside).
I put some black RTV on my (gloved) finger and covered the seam. No leak for a year now.

Trust me, your lower gasket is not leaking. The oil is coming out from the top somewhere, getting blown back through some of the cooling passages between the fins, etc on the valve cover, then seeping down the back side of the cylinders. When you take the tank off to do the gasket, you'll be able to see how intricate the oil path can be.

Thanks, Ken & Pat. That is good news to hear. I am going to take it apart tonight, and clean it up. It was leaking oil down the front and pooling on the top of the crankcase. I should be able to get a better view of it all when I have the tank off. Once I get the new gasket in place and everything put back together, I should be able to see if I got it all taken care of. Thanks again for the help! You guys are always the best tool in the toolbox.

          oil leak

Another thing that happenes is the chain tensioner on the front leaks and the oil blows back from it and finds its way around the motor to the back where u are finding it..MITCH

            Now then.......
Before I screwed up and cracked the front of my cylinder, my engine used to be bone dry. Would stay dry all around town. Base gasket would leak, middle-rear, but only long distance cross country, running a constant 85/90 per.
Either excessive crank pressure(But the crank vent to the carb should be handling that), or else engine is getting hot and cylinder warps slightly, leaking oil past the gasket.
You may try re-torquing the head bolts, I mean... could work.
Or like Pat said, clean it up very well with Brakleen, and then seal the gap with silicone.

Clean the black plug on the cam chain adjuster. Then apply something like a black silicone to the cam chain plug area.

                half moons

you might want to get those half moon rubber cork thingys, and change them with the valve cover. Just a thought

Thank you all for the input. I changed the gasked, and the half-circle end plugs, last night. I am going to clean it all up now, and see if that fixes the problem.
