    PETE:

According to a to this XS11 website:

    http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/xs11/carbspec.htm

I'm looking for 5GL16's, Tho they sound like they are of a UK spec Bike. Would you be intrested in parting with the carbs? It might be easier for me to rebuild a set of UK carbs than trying to source US needles.

    Thanks

    Paul
I'm afraid the carb set are damaged. One of the posts that hold the hinge-pin for the float is broken across the hole.

      XS Carbs hassles

      Paul,

The Midnight Special carbs are very likely to be the same as the Euro 1.1 Sport XS- made over the same period (alongside the Oz 1100RH), essentially the same thing as the Euro bike.

Certainly mine had 110 jets (sold it a couple of months ago - boo hoo) - but know a lot about the engine and carbs from years of various buggerations (technical term).

I think a couple of things are being mixed up in the thread here - some of the posting above appear to assume you need the needle replaced that connects to the bottom of the carb slider which fits into the diaphragm - (big long thing).

I think (correct me if I'm wrong) - you are after the needle valve which closes off the fuel as the float rises. Certainly that was rubber faced on my XS11 and worn enough to encourage overflows with fuel leaking out of the airbox... then later so bad it was all dumping into the sump (not good).

I changed them with new ones from one of the US parts places mentioned a lot here - can't quite remember which one - our American mates may be able to help my old brain here. Beware of import tax as these are new items and I got slapped with import (VAT) tax and an extra 20 quid from the courier company for no apparrent reason. Cost me dear - but did the trick.

For UK sources try looking for XS11 Sport parts and maybe have a chat with NRP in Manchester (on the web somewhere). They do replacement diaphragms (if your feeling really rich - I bought these too once when I had money). They also know their Jap bike carbs pretty well and may be able to help.

      Cheers - Graham

        Hi Graham

No, not the float needle I'm after the big long things the Slider Needle, well my Mech says I do. I'm taking his word for it.

I REALLY don't want to fork out for a new diaphrams at the moment, He says they are still ok but will need replacing in the futher. Mines not the Midnight Special, just a normal one, Chrome instead of black. I'm sure theres not a lot between the two.

I'll check out the UK sources, thanks a lot.

I suppose if theres anyone out there can help with either:

Jets for me Carb. I'm going to have a good look at them over the weekend and try and see the model type, but I know they are the Fixed type i.e. one notchers. Which makes them in the BS34-III 3j6-00 range type carb.

Any full set of carbs. I don't mind if they are UK or US Spec, but UK may be easier to get parts for. Must be complete and cheap

Oh and one other thing Anyone got a Choke lever? I broke the top of mine....

Again thanks to everyone who trying to help me.

Paul (Some day my bike will be running great again)

Needle jets (emulsion tubes) and jet needles (slide needles) do wear out. Metal on metal, with possible abrasive contaminants in the gas tank! Check out http://www.factorypro.com/products/n...et_Mikuni.html for details. I haven't picked any up yet, and I need to, but Keyster brand carb kits come with jet needles. They are the only source I've found for the 5GZ6 needle used in the series II carbs. The kit for your bike should have the needles you require.

cLUNKY transmission improved with oil change

Somewhere in this thread, I talked about the neandrathal transmission of the XS1100. ( Only owned it a few weeks).
I changed the oil to Valvoline 10w-40 and noticed the beast shifted smoother.
(Its No Goldwing GL1100) but it is shifting smoother.
