Carbs help for a 81SH in the UK

Hi All

I have a 81 SH which I brought back from the US. I need some help with my carbs. Unlike the UK spec the US carbs use a 110 main jet on the third groove. The prob is my jets are worn out and also they can not be adjusted. All Yamaha UK will supply me is a 132. Can anyone point me in the right direction where I can get 4 110 Jets that will ship to the UK.

Needle Jets

Thanks for the reply. I also need the Needle jet, checking with Mikes website which ones work in the 81 XS11 SH?

I see the Jet Needle - 5HX12 but its only got one grove, which I think is part of my running problem.

That is one thing about the '81. The carbs came "sealed" and there are almost no adjustments. The needles have only one groove, and there was a cap on the idle screw.
If you want more adjustment, try and get a set of carbs off an earlier bike, a '78 or '79.

Jet Needle - Part 2

Hi

I've just been to a SA XS1100 website and found the following webpage:

Now it states that the Jet Needle is fixed. (for the 80 SH)

It also states that its a 5GL16 Needle. Can anyone comment?

We need a positive identifcation of your carbs. They were changed from 79 to 80. Jet needle adjustment was one of the changes. Recessed and sealed pilot screws is another. Bowl venting, main jet sizing is all different depending on application. Do the main jets in your carbs screw into the carb body, or are they pushed into place and held by a small clip and screw? Screwed in jets tells you that the carbs are of the 78-79 vintage, and do have adjustable needles. Pushed in jets are from the 80-81 era, and the needles are non adjustable without shimming them in the sliders.

You been hitting the pain meds again?? The jets are NOT pressed on any model?? The float needle valve seats are what are pressed in in the 80-81 models! The main jets are all screwed into the tower on the bottom of the carbs.

First of all, you need to be SURE of your terminology and the parts you are describing, to eliminate confusion!!
You first stated you needed the main jets. Yes, the 81SH are 110 across all four carbs despite what the manuals say!! Jets don't get worn out!! They get gummed up, or messed up when people are rough taking them in and out, bunging up the slot, or the jet opening, but that's it!

Now, the Vacuum slide needle can get bent, and possibly a bit worn thru sliding in and out of the main NOZZLE, but would have to be a lot of friction!! They are NO LONGER available from Yamaha or other supply stores. The needles on MIkesXS are the wrong ones, for 650's, as you found by the model #!

Both Bikebandit and Old Bikebarn list a vacuum slide assembly, and BB is charging quite a lot, $119.24 ea. Partsnmore only charges $64.00, but their photo shows it to ONLY be the vacuum slide and rubber diaphragm....NO NEEDLE! Not sure why BB is charging so much more, possibly they include the needle but not sure, you might be able to contact them and inquire about what's included in the "assembly"!?

You say you're having running trouble, but haven't really told us what if any mods have been done to the bike? Does it have stock airbox and stock pipes, or Indy filters and aftermarket pipes? How was it running poorly?? If the carbs were just dirty, they could cause bad performance without necessarily the main jets being at fault!! Have you closely inspected the rubber parts of the slide diaphragms to ensure there aren't any pinholes in them?

The Pilot SCREW is sealed under a cap on the top front of the carb body, but can be accessed by drilling thru the caps, screwing in a sheet metal screw thru the cap, and then pulling them out! The Pilot jets are easily clogged, along with the Pilot circuit, and are hard to thoroughly clean WITHOUT removing the Pilot Screws! Be careful, there are several small metal and rubber washers on the bottom of the Screws!

You can get new main jets from many sources that ship internationally, including MikesXS, BikeBandit, OldBikeBarn. However, unless you've modded the intake or exhausts, you probably don't need to change the mains, just clean them!!

Hi All

The Bike has stock carbs, air and pipes.

To be clear, the main jets did require replacing, as its a US carb which someone had replaced with the UK spec 132 Jets. I now have some 110's So hopefully thats bits done.

The Needle Jet / Slide Needle (there seems to be a few different names) is where I currently have the problem with. Checking various XS Owners clubs (UK, US and SA) I seem to have different specs on what is required.

I got the carbs balanced at a local bike shop, the mech, knows his stuff. He had a look at the slides needles has recommend that I replace them along with the diaphrams (Tho the diaphrams are ok at the moment). The Slides do wear out at the tips, again I'm going by what he said (he loves XS as well)

I've checked Old Bike Barn as well as BikeBandits OEM Parts. In bike barn all I can see is the Diaphram's 89.95 (how can a wee bit of rubber and metal cost 90 bucks????).

So really at the moment all I need are four slide needles to get the bike running (hopefully). Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get a UK spec Carb of eBay, One went last night for 80 GPS (kicking myself)

Can anyone see a link just for the slide needles? Maybe I'm getting old but I can't seem them. Do you have a part number for the old bike barn vacuum slide assembly? All I can see is the diaphrams. (20-6028)

I can't see how the vacuum slide needles could wear out. They don't touch anything, just slide in and out of the main nozzle, metering fuel via their taper, and fuel flow through the hole in the main jet.

Like TC says, it's possible they could be bent due to careless work.

I think they must vibrate in the emulsion tubes. I think it's the reason that Dynojet emulsion tubes are renowned for wearing out on some models (bandit 12 for one). What else could wear them out but the slide needle?

Irishbiker, I have a set of spare carbs, reportedly off an xs11. I'll see what condition the needles are in.

Right I have checked out the spares I have, and the needles are marked 4Hz25, the emulsion tubes are 318, and the mains are 32.5. one of the needles is damaged however, it has plier marks on the taper

I'm looking for 5GL16's, Tho they sound like they are of a UK spec Bike. Would you be intrested in parting with the carbs? It might be easier for me to rebuild a set of UK carbs than trying to source US needles.
