  • Wrong XJ crankshaft seal!?

Gee, all I want is MY BIKE BACK TOGETHER!
I have received an incorrect part from a Yamaha dealer. It's for the right-side of the crankshaft of my '82 XJ1100J.

I referenced the Yamaha parts website to get the numbers of the parts I wanted. When I contacted the Yamaha dealer, he said that the part had been superceeded. He then sent me the superceeded part. It wouldn't fit there in a million years!

I'm in the process of convincing him that the part he'd sent me was incorrect. I think that the '82 XJ1100J Crankshaft-piston fiche had both incorrect nomenclature AND part number.

I researched a bit to find that earlier years of (pretty much) the same engine had SEQUENTIAL NUMBERS for their crankshaft seals. I'd even be willing to bet that I could use one of the right-side seals from the '81 XS1100SH.

This is what I'd ordered using the Yamaha Crankshaft-piston parts fiche for my '82 XJ1100J:
    2 93101-32087-00 OIL SEAL
    3 4H7-15389-10-00 SEAL, PUSH ROD*
(*the superceeded part number is 93101-32144)

    Here's the '81 XS1100SH, XS1100SH, and XS1100H that have these parts:
    2 93101-32087-00 OIL SEAL
    3 93101-32088-00 OIL SEAL

    Here's the '80 XS1100SG, XS1100LG, and XS1100G that have these parts:
    2 93101-32087-00 OIL SEAL
    3 93101-32088-00 OIL SEAL

    HHMMmmmmm!?
    Tell me whatcha' think, guys.

You can buy the correct seals at Bikebandit. I bought a set of crank seals (OEM Yamaha)there last year for my big bore project. The right side seal had been modified by the manufacurer. The ridge around the outside has been removed. That means that you won't have to split the cases to change it. Just gorilla theold one out, and tap the new one in. A bit of a warning...Don't try to start or run the engine with the alternator off to check for leaks. There is a plug in the oil galley that feeds the main bearings, and if you look near the bottom of the case where the alt cover attaches, you'll see a small pointed tip protruding. This is the plug. It is not threaded, it is just pushed in and sealed with an o ring. It will blow out under pressure. It is held in place by the alt cover. It didn't happen to me, but I read here that it did happen to another member...he posted a warning about it here.

I got into the same thing when I had my engine apart this past winter. I contacted yamaha and they told me it was a revised part and the correct one to use.

I have had mo problem with it at all

        Right seals? on Bikebandit ...

'looks to me like Yamaha decided to change the seal but Bikebandit still carries the same parts for all of the '82XJ1100, '81XS1100' & '80XS1100's:

        2 OIL SEAL,S-TYPE 358289-001 l-side
        3 OIL SEAL,S-TYPE 358293-001 r-side

I guess that it's my choice. I don't like NOT having the "step" on the left-side seal like the right-side has.

          Oops, wrong sides ...

          I meant:

If it's not available, it's not available.

Cars and trucks have been using oil seals without the "step" on them for a long time with no trouble. Makes it MUCH easier to replace if it does start to leak on you as well.

Confusion could have been averted ...

Ya know, If they really DID supercede the part, why wouldn't they say so when the part came to me?
A simple, "This funny-lookin' part really does replace the one that looks like it belongs. Just use it 'cus we said so an' shut up. It'll work just fine." might be nice.
