  • 79 XS1100SF Front Brakes

Alright guys, I pulled a pretty boneheaded move, I accidentally purchased the wrong set of front brake calipers. I have a 79 XS100 SF and the ones I purchased are for a 79 standard. I've looked over the mounting and I think they will work on my special anyway. I haven't ordered pads yet though and wanted some imput on if this will work or not. Thanks in advance.

I have a Special too (SG) and, looking at the book, the calipers are different. The Standard has mounting bolts top and bottom, with corresponding mounting tabs on the forks. The Specials have only one mounting bolt, which screws vertically into an ear which is completely different.

I’d put those calipers for sale on E-Bay and pick up the right ones for your Special. Maybe you can swap them with someone on this forum?

I do not believe they will work unless you get standard fork lowers because, as mentioned above, the mounts are different.

So I visited the yamaha parts index today and you are right, standards are bolted in horizontally and specials are vertical. I guess I am one lucky SOB. The guy who sold me the calipers on e-bay had them posted as 79 standard but actually they are off an SF. Thats why I thought I could get them to fit, they are actually the right ones. Guess everyone has to get lucky once in a while. Thanks for the help guys.

While we're on the subject of 79sf, are the front and rear brake discs interchangeable?

Nopers, the Special rear is the same as the standard rear and will not interchange with the special....not sure about the standard - I know the standard front and rear use the same pads though.

            *update*

And then I read the question actually being asked - I'm not sure of the answer

Yep, front and rear discs are the same.

You can find the answers to these type questions by going to the online Yamaha parts site here:

The solid rotors can be used in any position, and the slotted rotord are stamped L or R. The right side slotted rotor will fit front and rear, but the left rotor is front only, but that's just cosmetic...to keep the slotts pointing in the same direction. If you had to, you could mount any slotted rotor in any position.

Good. I have a crappy rear disc I need to have turned or replaced. Might be cheaper to get a replacement.
