  • Rusty tank

I was given a spare tank with this xs and after I got a key and opened it I found it was rusty inside. I wanted to use it as the one on the bike has dents. Does anyone know a way to get the rust out?

Get a piece of dog chain and a product called Kream from any bike shop. Follow the directions on the can's. There are other tank lining systems out there also. Do a search for Kream from the left hand column to find some other ways.
Be XS'TREAMLY careful with the acid. After your done be sure to use two inline fuel filters.
There's always a way, figure it out.

The Kreem stuff is hard to work with and you have to prep it with acid.

Merriam Cycle has this new silver stuff that you prep with hot water and dry. It seams to hold up better as the Kreem has started to come off of a few tanks that wasn't prepped right I guess.

        Hey there Richard,

Check out this tech tip!Clean Rusty Tank

I used some Rusty Tank sealer from the auto section of the JCW catalog, designed to work on tanks with residual rust in it, Has held for almost 5 years now, and I didn't use an acid bath back then, just chain and alcohol!

A piece of chain is a great idea to loosen rust. It is easily retreived through the tank.

You can utilize phosphoric acid to remove and neutralize the rust. This can be found at any hardware store or Lowe's. You'll have to be sure and seal the tank so it doesn't get on the paint.

Personally I would not "kreem" a tank unless it was leaking. I have talked to a few people that claim it will come loose inside the tank after a few years. I've also talked to others that swear by it. I just wouldn't take the chance unless the tank had pinholes.

Phosphoric acid will totally neutralize any rust if done properly.

            Just my arrogant opinion.

            Good luck

Well, I will give you a CBMMA version that I like and works really well. Go and get a gallon of Muriatic acid from the harware store, remove petcocks and fab up some sort of block offs with gasket material. Pour the gallon of Muriatic acid in and fill the tank with water and let it sit over night. Guaranteed to be down to bare metal by morning. Order some POR20 tank liner from ebay etc.. (10.00 bucks)
This stuff is epoxy and lasts longer than Kreem.

M.E.K (methyl ethyl keytone) makes lite work out of taking out old kreem from tanks.

                POR-15

I had very little loose or scale type rust in my tank but had pinholes, did a search on web, read some horror stories about kreem coming off and ending up in carbs after a few years. Then I read about POR-15, and sounded good, so check it out, its about the same price as kreem, and worked good for me.

                  Rust gas tank fix

Hi XS-ers, Just wanted to put in my two bits and say Caswel's epoxy worked great for my rusty tank. its chemical and fuel resistant, and bonds to the rusted interior of the tank, just follow instructions.
