  • Oil Cooler Question - Filter Bolt Length

Do the oil coolers require a different length oil filter cover hold down bolt?

Does anyone have a short bolt they have left over after installing a cooler?

    I need to buy one!

    Thanks

You use the same oil filter bolt with or without a cooler. With a cooler, there is an adaptor, a sort of short hollow bolt. It threads into the block, then the oil filter bolt threads into it.

      Hey Gotsm,

New bolts are available from several sources, here's Partsnmore's info. The bolt is only $6.00, but you need a $35.00 order for shipping, I'm sure you can find some more stuff to order if you'll shop their site!!

        Oil cooler adapter bolt

I had to make an adapter bolt for my oil cooler adapter. Don't forget that there needs to be a 1/2" step for the oil filter to seal against. That is there is a nut on the adapter bolt that is 1/2" thick with threads inside for the oil filter bolt.

          Bolts-Bolts-Bolts

I'm going to have to post some photos, but it seems that a shorter bolt is in order here.

Will try to get some posted tomorrow.........

You do not need a shorter bolt there is a adapter bolt that allows you to use the stock oil filter bolt after you install the oil cooler. I have one comes off a 1981 Yamnaha xs1100 it threads into block of engine holding the oil cooler on and is hollow with threads that allows the stock oil filter bolt to work. Works great. e-mail to andreashweiss@yahoo.com
