  • hey guys, just wanted to show yall my new bike..

i'm new to the whole cruiser world, finally decided to give up on sportbikes as my wrists and back kill me on long rides now. i bought a 1981 XS1100 with 3,825 miles on it. i dont know if its original miles, but this thing is CLEAN. everything's stock except for the exhaust, which i really dont like. here's a pic of it..

i took off the windshield, dont like how it looks, i think it looks much better without. the exhaust is a 4 into 1 jardine, it sounds way too much like a sportbike.. does anybody have a decent solution to this? i'm thinking about lopping off the slip on part and welding on a harley pipe or something. i really want a low, throaty growl, not a higher pitched wail like the jardine is. also, what have people used as highway pegs? i'm 6'1, and i feel really scrunched up on the bike, and i'd like some highway pegs so i can stretch out. finally, have people come up with any solutions to get rid of that ugly 80s style seat? i'd really like to go with a real streamlined solo seat such as whats popular these days. i sure do love this bike though, its got tons of power and rides great. opinions, thoughts?

Welcome to the world of the XS11.
    One
of the guys on another site was selling new engine gaurds for the XS1100. That is the most common mounting place for Hi-way pegs (I believe).
I don't know if he has any left, but I would imagine that the answer is an email away.
His name is Rob. I think that you can get him at xs750@cbmma.net

    Good luck.

Decent new pipes are kinda slim pickins. About the only thing out there is Mac or Jardine, and the Jardine's are hard to find. I'm trying to find a right side Jardine muffler for my bike, with no luck. The Mac's can be found on ebay. About the only other choice is a set of lightly used OEM pipes.

well, i rode around austin today on the new bike, ran great. smells like fuel just a little bit but hey its a 25 year old bike. lol. i'll probably get the carb boots and all that stuff replaced soon. i went to a yamaha dealership and found a universal highway peg setup for 90 bucks and the bar bolted right to the frame with a little bit of work, and it works great. flexes a little but once i get some loctite on the nuts, it shouldnt ever go anywhere. now i just need to get some o ringed pegs to replace the steel pegs that came with the kit. definitely an improvement though. next i think i'm going to try and paint the front and rear fenders.. really not a fan of chrome, and i think the bike would look better with the fenders matching the tank. is that color red a stock yamaha color?

          no chrome

this is a little less chrome

as far as exhaust goes lose the baffle or drill the end cap with 1/4 in holes, gives a more throty sound.

              Hey there TribalTalon,

As for the paint color, it looks a bit dark, so not sure if it's OEM, either Macho Maroon, doubt if it's Ruby Red?

As for the fenders, I, too, painted mine, but out of necessity, mine were severely rusted and pitted. Yours look very nice, so you might want to take them off and save them, and try to get some lesser quality ones from EBAY. That way you could sandblast, whatever to prep the worn chrome to hold paint! You could even sell your good ones on EBAY, probably for a decent price!?

The seat pan is unique, and so you can get with an upholsterer to reshape the foam and put a custom cover over the pan!? But that seat also looks pristine. Hate to see it get cut up!?
Welcome to the world of Xsives. I'm 6'6" so I know that cramped feeling!! I've got highway pegs on my engine guards, but I actually like the under my hips position for when I'm hot dogging thru the twisties!!

                hey! chevy45412001

when you get on the gas hard do you get that way cool intake growl ! I think its from the vaccum/ slides rattling. What ever,it's to die for! Louder than my stock exhaust untill 4000 rpm. the guy starting this thread might want to go this direction for cooler sound. And for Isippell Is that seat on your bike real cow hide? Looks like a saddle/ western style.

                  super dave and others

I like loud pipes. And i'm not so sure about the others but the kerker 4-1 with no baffles but still has end cone, has a very deep growl, all the way till about 7,000 rpm, then the pich gets a little higher octive. but around town it sounds like the big block that it is... By the way isi love that black motor..looks killer.

i really want to just lose the jardine slipon part completely, i need to look into finding a pipe. what i'm kind of envisioning is something like a vstar warrior uses, that big ass single pipe. thats what i want. and the front and rear fenders are in awesome shape. very very little pitting. seriously, this entire bike is PRISTINE. its crazy. original tires and everything *yikes* i know, i know, i'm getting new tires on tuesday. i actually got an offer today for 2,000 dollars for the bike, but i had to turn that down cold. i love this bike! i guess i'll probably just put the seat, rear and front fenders up on ebay for sale once i find a front fender and i think i'm gonna use a sportser rear fender and figure out a decent way to make a seat (custom seatpan) and that will basically really complete the bike for me.

                      superdave.

I wish. It's a cover by B&H Specialties( http://www.motorcycleseatcovers.com/index.htm) on a stock seat, The only modification to it is that I shaved 1" of foam off of it and put memory fome in place.

If you like the warrior style exhaust then try doint a search on this site for a "can mod". Several people have taken the "can"off of an r1 and made it woek with a 4-1 header. I am sure that you could do that with a warrior exhaust, just take a little of "massaging". I run a setup just like Chevy's. I have a supertrap 4-1 that has only a cone in the end, all of the baffles are out and it is very loud and throaty. Also have individual K&N filters that give a great sound under hard acceleration.
