    are the coils interchangable throughout the years?

    No.

    The earlier ones, 78 - 80 are 1.5 ohm coils and need the ballast resistor to bring the total resistance in the primary circuit to 3 ohms.

    The later coils are 3 ohms and so do not use the ballast resistor.

    It's easy to tell which ones are which, the earlier ones have " FOR USE WITH EXTERNAL RESISTOR" embossed into the case.

        I was trying to be sneaky, but I saw some accel coils for a 79 on ebay and was curious to know if they would work on my 81. Oh well.
