voltage regulators/rectifiers

i am in need of one to fit my 78 xs11e. there are a number on ebay for differnt yamhas that look like they all have the same wire codes, but they have only one large plug--not two smalller ones.

my question is: are the internals of these units pretty much the same? can the wiring harness be cut and matched up to the harness on my bike my matching colors?

i dont want to spend $100 on a new rect/reg, but id rather do that than screwing up my entire charging system trying to rig somthing up.

Hi Ben

I would guess no. If they have different wires (nr of wires) they have different inputs and outputs, and would likely not work as expected.

A visit to your local dealer should yield part #'s for the 78E, 79F, 79SF, 80 etc to see if the part is the same # between some models. Not sure if all 78-81 XS1100s had the same reg/rect unit.
