  • Float Needle

I have cleaned my carbs and set the floats but noticed something strange. I have new K&L float needles and seats. (No I didn't use the jets.) On one of the needles the little spring loaded pin is only about half as tall as the other three. I had to bend the tang on the float alot to get the right float height. Will this affect anything? The bike seems to run lean on that carb and the bike pops and doesn't run well untill about 4k then kicks in pretty good.
Also when pulling the spark plug caps while running to help in my diagnosis, I get lit up like a Christmas tree. Just holding the cap while still on the plug I can feel a small tingle. When I actually pull it off spark jumps everywhere including up my arm. Is this normal or is it time for new caps?

Mike, the caps are fine - but hey, it's only about 12000 volts you're gettin stung with - barely noticable.

By the sound of it, a lot of K&L parts seem to be dodgy at best. Bending the hell out of the tangs to accomadate junk parts can only be bad news.

      Hey Mike,

First, you might try a pair of needle nose pliers and gently pull on the pin on that float needle and see if it will pull out any further? Secondly, with the float pin not sticking out as far, that carb should actually be more rich than the others. I know you've readjusted the tang to set the float at the right height. With it not kicking in until around 4K, sounds more like the pilot circuit is still clogged a bit, cause it's kicking into the mains by that rpm!
      Keep at it!

And electricity tries to flow thru the least resistance, and once you've pulled the caps, the only path it has to ground is thru you!! Try using some heavy rubber gloves.
