  • Turn Signals

I'm thinking about replacing the front turn signals (2H7-83310-70-00) on my 80G. In looking around I see them offered for anywhere from $17.95 to about $45. Are they all the same thing for different prices or is there really a difference?

For instance Speed and Sport has:

    2H7-83310-70-00
    FRT FLSHR LITE ASY
    XS1100 E, F 2H7
    $45.23

    2H7-83310-70-00-U
    FRT FLSHR LITE ASY
    XS1100 E, F 2H7
    $21.30

    2H7-83310-70-93
    2H7-83310-70-00
    XS1100 E, F 2H7
    $53.04

The last digits on the part number tell the story. My guess is one is a plastic copy. The third number has superceded the original part number, so the $53 price may be what you have to pay.
You can also try partsnmore or bike bandit to see if they have the correct parts. Some of the aftermarket lights are as nice as stock, and some are junk. usually the cheapest are the junk, but not always.

So can I assume the cheaper ones are plastic, and if I want a metal one like stock I have to plunk down the big bucks?

Has anyone found a replacement bulb socket for the stock unit? I looked around locally, found a couple that were close but no cigar.

I wouldn't necessarily assume that they are plastic! They have the slotted mounting section with the nut/bolt combo, don't think they would use that with Plastic due to tendency to crack and such! Perhaps you can drop them an EMAIL and inquire as to whether they are Chromed Steel vs. Plastic!?

Haven't tried to find the socket?

Don't buy turnsigns from Part&more. The ones I bought were crap. They snapped when I tighened the hold down screw. I ended up paying a high price for lenses.

Anyway I managed to round up a set of originals of eBay.

Where ever you buy the turn signals from, make sure you get the 2 wire type if your 80G has parking lights. The 27 Watt turn signal bulbs for a single wire should be the standard auto bulb # 1156.
              From what I have read.

I purchased the single wire signals from partsnmore and they came with a 21 watt bulb in them for $10.95 for the whole assy, same price for the 2 wire unit. The housing is metal and seems to be lighter than originals but for ten bucks its okay.

I believe the 2 wire signals should be 27 watts for turn signal and 8 watts for parking elements. I'm basing that on the flasher relay rating.
Please correct me if Im wrong. Please I don't want to give the wrong info out.

Well the chrome on mine is still good, and I found some chrome bumper paint that works ok to fix the corrosion on the reflector inside. I'll keep looking for a replacement socket, which was badly corroded also. Did a temporay fix with some brass shim stock inside and folded over and soldered to the outside to get the bulb grounded again.

Do you need a single or double wire socket for your bike? I have some singles from a 78 E if you'd like them.

Thanks, but I need the doubles. I want to change the rears to double too. I think it's a good idea to give as much light as possible to some of the crashdummy drivers out there.

I'll keep looking for some easily available replacement sockets and let everyone know where to get them.

In my signals the sockets are easy to remove and replace. I assume they are stock. They have a rubber boot and a screw on strap to retain it.

                          Steve,

I bought double contact sockets from NAPA for my bike and they worked real good. I even converted the pair with singles to double so I could have running lights front and rear.

                              Hey Steve,

A point about rear running lights, I believe they will need to be RED lenses if on all the time!! Many people have posted about this, depending on your States DMV regs, but it's pretty universal! IIRC, DK sells RED lenses for your OEM styled turn signals.
