    80g Standard - spare forks question

    I have a set of 80g front forks. Inner tubes are pitted. Had the forks around from a few years back when I couldn't get the seals out. Now I have the seals out but don't have any use for the forks.

    Are they worth keeping for rechrome later? If I wanted to use them on the 79sf I'd have to do a complete wheel/brake/fork swap anyway, right?

      Yeah Ben,

      You'd have to change brakes, and possibly triple tree also cause the rake is different. The wheel shouldn't need to change. The fender would though, mounts different on SF vs F. Most folks have commented that it's very costly to have parts rechromed. If you want cleaner newer upper tubes for the SF, you would probably do better getting NEW from Forks By Frank, vs. trying to fight someone for a set on Ebay!

              Would it be possible to put a standards sliders onto a special?
              I know the rake is different on the bikes, maybe the special would handle better with the axle on the bottom (less rake)?
              Also, after looking at photos of the two bikes, the calipers look very similar in dimension. Where the slider mounts position them for the front wheel looks like the only difference to me, (I have no standard ones to look at). Am I wrong?

                  The calipers are two totally different animals, and cannot be cross bred. They are different dimensions, mount totally differently, and require different types of brake pads. On a Standard, all three calipers are the same, but the fronts on a Special are different. The rear caliper on a Special is the same as all three on a Standard. The only way to swap them would be to change the lower forks from one model to another.

                      Rechroming will cost bout the same as another set off ebay. I got another set.

                              I had a Venture Royale ('83) that had some seriously pitted forks (not rusty though) , I took a Dremel with a burnishing wheel and hit every single pit to make sure it dished in with no chrome flash. Then I polished the forks with Crocus cloth. Came out awesome.

                              Most of this was above the normal travel area and only mattered because I changed the fork seals and cut them when I reinstalled them.
