    i have a 78 standard ignitionunit type td14-01. also have unit off 80 spec. type tid 14-04. will it work on the 78 ?..........fly

    Hey Fly,

    The numbers you're looking for are the 2H7- designation, which should also be on the TCI box. The 78-80's used the same box, in 81 they changed to 4RO- due to elimination of centrifugal advance/incorporated in the chipset, and in 82 to 10M- thru elimination of vacuum advance/retard module incorporated in sensor box and chipset in TCI.

    In 80, Yamaha "Locked" the timing plate with special shear off bolts so the owner couldn't tweek his timing by moving the position of the timing plate!

    SO....your 80SG box will work with your 78 Standard!

      the unit from the 80 is 4ro-10. the 78 is 2h7-10

        No, 4ro is for the 81's... unless your timimg plate/pickup assembly is also from the 81. They must work together.
