  • Another middle drive burial

I've been hearing some strange noises from my middle drive ever since I got my rear tire changed. At first I thaught it was the exhaust leaking somewhere. It was kinda annoying.
So yersterday I had some time on my hands and decided I'd take off the middle drive cover and the bearing and see whats up.
First, I wasn't impressed by this:

I changed the middle drive oil bout 1000 miles before. It was the same then, but I thaught it was just some goo I couldnt get to when cleaning it the first time when a bearing went (got the bike with bad bearings in there).
OK... so I soon discovered I have to pull the entire middle drive to see anything. Damn circlip in the back prevents the axle to slide out. So I removed the middle drive. As I drained the oil, only a small amount seeped out, and there was a weird sound there, just like some bolts or grains of sand would fall on the floor. Well, it was this:

Now that aint good. Didn't take me long to find this:

    and this:

Now... the probbable cause was improper (OK, I admit, the lack of) spacing between gears. They got too close together and ate eachother. Anyone here knows a good dentist?
Anyway, I hope a fellow XS-er from Germany has another middle drive he could part with.

    Hey Strom,

Have you been following the money vs. horsepower thread! Looks like a perfect time to make that CHAIN DRIVE CONVERSION using that old middle drive unit!?

Wish shipping costs weren't so high, cause if you didn't want to keep it, I would like to get ahold of your ground up one!!

      Heya TC!

A friend is planning on going to mexico and maybe get a cheap bike and tour the states. I could give it to him to bring over, but that might not be for a while (maybe next year).
Meanwhile I'll ask a few other friends what can be done.

PS: I haven't been following that thread (will now). I am trying to keep the bike as stock as possible. I have another bike in mind for crazy conversions. I was wondering how to put a chain drive on a guzzi.

Ther were a couple on ebay last time I checked. Shipping to Germany would be costly.

Anyway, I hope a fellow XS-er from Germany has another middle drive he could part with.

He said he has it. But wants 250 euro for it including shipping. A rich for my wallet at the moment. Gonna try and scrape it up. Hopefully before the season is over. He said I could make several payments, but I hate owing people money.

Got it. Just installed. A brand 15000 miles new middle drive that looks and feels like new new. Traded with a guy I met once for a speedo and a headlight. I had an extra speedo, but no headlight. He needs one intact, with no scratches or dents in the chrome rim. I hope I find it soon, I hate owing ppl things.

PS: I can ride again, yipeeee!!!

Strom, the drive units are set up and adjusted for backlash when they're built. Adjusting backlash is some sort of secretive scary technical thing they do with gears. All those funny numbers engraved all through the unit are something to do with it. A mate from work was a motorbike mechanic - he reckoned the cogs etc.. have to be dialed in super accurate with all forces exact and perfectly even. If not absolutely precise - the the teeth all self destruct. Your wasted unit probably got slightly worn for some reason, then, whamo! it was all over rover.

Bearings went to hell in that unit when oil leaked thru the oil seal. Bearings were dry and locked up at bout 70. The PO didnt fall off!!!! Just had a rather quick stop. I replaced the bearings, but I guess they tinkered with it at the POs house. Eh, well. All the things you need and stuff are described in yamaha shaft drive booklet. It's in pdf, if you need it. Works for XS 750 and 1100. Probbably 850 too.
