  • Cracked Frame

On my '79 XS11 Special, I just found a clean break, on the upper right frame, about 4" back of the seat mounting bracket. Last year. I had a break on the left side, right behind the seat mount. On looking closer, it seems that it may have been welded once before on the right side, right where the signal mounting bracket starts. I've got 38,000 miles on it, ( wish they were all mine! ). Is this common, of did I get a frame "made on a monday or friday"? Thanks for any thoughts.

    Hey Lloydo,

Very possibly the P.O. had a backrest/luggage rack type device mounted to the back which put more stress on the back end of the frame, a few others have reported similar stress fractures due to similar overloading of the rear section.

We won't get into discussions of SWMBO's and their respective weights!

You should be able to find a welder to afix repairs without having to resort to getting a new frame!?

Thanks, when I bought the bike, the guy had mounted the luggage setup from I think an '82 Venture, one of those 2 helmet trunks, & side bags. Pretty much all supported by the upper frame, with small bars mounted to the lower shock bolts. I thought it was rather large & bulky. After the crack last year, I took all that off, and since then only have the luggage rack, & a pair of leather bags, with a strap that goes under the seat to hold them. Perhaps it was weakend already from the Venture setup.

BTW, it's in the shop as we speak being welded.

          Broke off mine right there.

put some steel bars in for extra strenght and a friend welded it.
I'd post a pic, but... gotta find it first. If anyone wants it, send me a mail
