Throttle Cable Issues

Okay thanks, what should I lube it with, the cable is routed just like you guys said and I think what happened to thumperjsa is what happened to me.

When you buy the new cable, then ask the clerk at the shop for some cable lube. It is made for control cables. I have to get off the puter now. My back is starting to hurt. Good luck.

From what I can see in the pics, it looks to be routed properly. It's so hard to tell from just looking at pics. Did you say that the problem shows up when you put the tank on? Any chance that the front mounting pockets on the tank are interfering with the cable?

The routing looks good to me as well - I just checked out my Midnight and it's the same.

I always have trouble reconnecting the toggle on the bottom of the cable into the throttle lever. Now I get on the righthand side of the bike and use a long screwdriver to lift up the throttle lever arm so that the 'hooks' are open (gap to the front), whilst my able bodied assistant uses another screwdriver from the lefthand side to push the toggle backwards into the raised hooks.

Once the toggle is in place allow the throttle spring to pull the lever back down and it holds the cable under a slight tension.

Usually takes at least 10 minutes to catch it right.

The best way that I have found to connect-disconnect the cable at the carbs is to slide the carbs to the left when removing them, tilting them to the rear, making the attaching point readily accessable. The same goes for installing them. Insert them from the left, and when they are part way in, tilt them to the rear, and reattach the cable. Very easy to do, and saves a bunch of cussing...unless you like to cuss. Given how hard it is to do the cable when the carbs are in place this way is almost quicker than trying to attach the cable with the carbs in place.

I got a new throttle cable just in case and I took the carbs out so I can reinstall them makeing sure of no mistakes except when I took them out I broke a fuel filter This seems like it never ends!, ohh well, does anyone have an extra fuel filter? If not how much are they? Thanks

I don't know what type of filters you have, but they should be available at any auto parts store, and they only cost a couple of bucks, so if ya gotta change one, you might as well do them both while you're right there.

Did you follow my suggestions on removing the cable? Was it easier than messing with it while the carbs were in place?

yes I did thanks for the tip, It was alot simpler than what the manual said to do. I went to my local Yamaha dealer for the fuel filter and they said they would have to special order it for $21.99, this sounds a little expensive! I think I will go to a auto parts store and see if there is something I can use instead of the factory part. Thanks

Save yourself the trouble and get a couple of $3 in-line fuel filters. That is all you need. CLear ones to me are better because you can check the fuel flow.

There is also a good tip somewhere on the way to run the fuel lines to prevent any kinks.
