  • 160mph speedometer search

    I have a 1981 xs1100 midnight special with the standard 85mph speedo.
I am looking for a 160mph speedometer, probably one from a '79 xs1100 special would work.
If anyone has one and would like to part with it please respond.

140 mph speedos from the XS750/850 works too. I put one on my MN Special. I don't go over 140 MPH too often .

      160 speedometer

I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ONE FOR MY 82 XJ1100. JUST FOR BRAGGING RIGHTS ONLY. I AM NO SPEED DEMON, I JUST LIKE THE LOOKS THAT PEOPLE GET WHEN THEY SEE 160 ON THE DIAL.
      Thanks Tom

          From a previous post....
          ******************
The XS speedo will not fit the XJ. To get a 160 mph on the XJ, you need to:

Find a good XS 160 face plate
Expand the size of the odometer window (make it wider to fit the XJ numerals)
          Remove the XJ speedo
          Swap face plates
Send the speedo in to be calibrated to the new face plate (Around $50.00, send the old face plate along!)
Put the modified speedo back on your XJ.

Dean Koehler and myself have done this swap, Dean did it first and posted the story to this list. We both used a shop in Portland, OR for re-calibrating services. Result is a speedo that looks factory installed but has the 160 mph face plate.
          ********************

Ther are more details concering the actual face plate swap, but it isn't hard to do. For example, the needle fits on a splined shaft. Remove it by *gently* prying it using 2 small screwdrivers, on on each side of the needle. There is also a pre-load on the needle shaft; you will see a spiral spring after you take the speedo out of the cluster. Mark the position of the 'bell' on the needle shaft relative to the speedo frame; this will give the recalibrators a place to start. Do this before you remove the needle!

My total cost was about $75.00 for the whole project, including shipping, but that was a few years ago......

The nice thing about this swap, in addition to having a 160 mph speedo, is that the style of type and color of the early XS faceplate matches the XJ's tach, so it looks like a factory install job. Have photos somewhere......

Could not find the original thread on this, may have aged out over the years. I'll try to find the name of the Portland-area shop that did the calibrations. The guy who did it started his own business after he did my speedo, can't remember the shop name off-hand. However, you may be able to find a local shop that will do the job for you, as long as you have the original faceplate to work from.
