  • R1 muffler

I picked up a R1 muffler at a local swap meet for $15.00. I was able to successfully attach it to the Jardine (black) 4:1 header system on my XS11F. It required a little hacking and the fabrication of a muffler mount. To get the desired exhaust exit angle I also removed the stock muffler/ buddy peg mounts.

My bike is now very quiet with no loss in perfromance. In fact I have enjoyed a giant increase in MPG. With the straight through muffler that came with the Jardine, I was getting between 135 to 155 mile before reserve (32-36 MPG). On the BIDuece, I got an increadable 175 mile before reserve on two seperate occations (41 MPG).

The only explanation I can come up with is the muffler is designed to support a 145+ HP motor and let a 95 HP motor breath very well.

I plan to work with Mike H. to post a tech articale with picutes.

Great, Denny, whatever I can do to help that tip along, just let me know. Another tip we could do is your clip-ons, some good closeups and info on where you got the bars, how much they cost.

I'm sure you're right, if the R1 muff can flow enough air for that herky power plant, that's more than enough flow for an XS.

Re your milling the head for 10.5:1 compression - can that support more carburetion as well? Maybe a set of 36mm flat-slides? Or would you need cam work as well?

Upping the CR would support larger carbs in the higher RPM ranges. My reason for increasing the CR is to improve low-end torque. The XS already has enough mid & high RPM power for me.

If one where seeking maximim HP, cam work would yield significant improvements in power also.

Denny. looks like the R1 tip is maybe an addendum to Installing Black 4 into 1 Header and Muffler (Canister) on the standard?

Or maybe it's a tip unto itself?
