Butterfly Throttle Shaft Seals

Hey folks,

Had a question by another Xsive, and wasn't sure! Has anyone else gotten and used the shaft seals from Mike's XS on their XS1100 carbs?

I found them available from Motorcyclecarbs.com, but doesn't state what the part # is.

I got the ones from Rob and they seem to work fine.. no complaints here

I just got a set of butterfly seals from motorcyclecarbs.com and They're not right.

Old ones are 8mm id x 12mm od (they were dried and split as I suspected)

new ones are 8mmid x 11mm od, they do not seal on the carb body but they're ok on the shaft.

IIRC, all of the XS's use BS34 carbs,right?

The '78 and '79 have BS-34II carbs, the later models have BS-34III carbs. Whether there's a shaft difference, I don't know.

The response I got from Rob Reil:

Trust me they will work. We use them on BS carb restorations every time and
they work great. Have faith. Even though they are different, they will work.
If you are still a bit paranoid a light coating of lithium white grease will
help some but we assemble them dry.

My reply:

No way.

These seals are too sloppy to provide anything resembling a seal. I do not have 'faith' and will not install them on faith only to have to dis-assemble my carbs to get it done right. If you do not have the correct seals, let me know and I will return these.

FYI, the seals I got are a 1 mm short in diameter AND thickness from the originals!

I've used the Butterfly Shaft Seals from MikesXS on my '81 LH. They appear to be the exact dimensions of the old seals.

I'm desperately seeking some direction on this...gee it was 60 degrees here yesterday and I'm gettin' itchy, my carbs are on the bench....

Do the BS34II carbs have different seals than the BS34III's?

Should I send the seals back and order the OEM's?

Any help would be appreciated!

Checked the microfiche. Used a '79f(BS34II) and an H model(BS34III)
BS34II was 2A2-14997-00-00
BS34III was 256-14997-00-00.
There's a post somewhere here telling of the changes in parts numbers and what they mean. If you can't find it, you may wish to stop by Yamaha. If the part number was changed or superceded... their computer should show that. I believe the first several numbers designated the model it was first used on... could stay the same, but could change over the years. (I would look for that old post, but we've finally got some work in here... and I need to make a little money today)

Actually first 3 # is the first time number was ever used? (I think)

first #'s are what model, rest are for the type of part.
First #'s don't match, part size/shape/what ever would make it not the same one you need if part # not listed in your manual.

I bought my seals directly from yamaha,
they were only $4 each Aus, so as far as yamaha
is concerned i thought that was good value.
unfortunately i dnt have a part number, but i think there
mentioned somewhere on a different thread,
i always apply thin amount of rubber grease on all seals
where the rubber meets the shaft.
